Tuesday the Brussels Bulldogs
started their round-robin play in the
B finals of the Huron County
Fastball League against the Lieury
Red Sox.
The Red Sox took an early lead
with Borm taking a walk, then
Lewis hit a triple to score Borm.
The Bulldogs left six base
runners stranded over the next four
innings, but didn't score a run until
the fifth when Greg Wheeler
singled on to be later hit home by
Mike Watson.
In the ninth inning the Red Sox
loaded the bases but Dave Smith
came back with three consecutive
strikeouts to stop the Sox.
In the eleventh inning Brent
Bantams
Kirk Baillie led the Brussels B
Bantam soccer team in a 4-2 win
over rival Acre T. Baillie scored
the first two goals and his two-way
efforts at centre half were the keys
to victory.
Cory Campbell started as keeper
for Acre T. His efforts blunted the
B attack. The two sides were
evenly matched and the play
moved from end to end.
Baillie's first goal was followed
by a penalty kick and his low drive
into the corner beat Campbell.
Acre T managed to dribble the
ball up the field and around the
Brussels B players. Sandy Rijkhoff
handled the ball as it was passed to
her in front of the net, and made a
quick shot past goalie Tyler Bragg.
The defense for the Bs was
formidable with Case Van Den
Heuval joining Scott Clarkson and
Pat Brown as fullbacks. At the
other end Pete Terpstra and
Theresa Albers blunted the B
attack. The half ended with the Bs
leading 2-1.
Campbell moved to striker for
Acre T'and Mike Albers was the
keeper. At the other end Bragg
moved to centre forward and
Phillip Graber became the keeper.
Campbell's efforts at centre
forward paid off with a goal.
Graber smothered the ball on
several occasions as Campbell led
the Acre T offense.
The Brussels B lead was
extended when Terry Nichol scored
on a penalty kick. Acre T continued
its drive for another goal but was
left without triumph. In the last
minute of the game Nichol scored
to make the final score 4-2.
Whitmore singled on and was hit
home by Brian McArter. The
Bulldogs held on to take the 2-1
win. Smith pitched the complete
game for the Bulldogs.
The Belgrave Blue Devils took
on the Bulldogs Thursday night.
Belgrave started the scoring in the
third inning with Olson, Andrews
and Wintemate each crossing home
plate. The Bulldogs came back in
the next inning scoring Smith but
then left the bases loaded. In the
top of the sixth the Bulldogs tied
the game when Brian McArter and
Bruce Johnston scored. But the
Blue Devils regained the lead in the
bottom when Pegg scored on
Robinson's two ran home.
The Bulldogs came back in the
seventh to score Andrew
McCutcheon, but a Blue Devil
double play shut down the Bulldog
offense.
Belgrave took the win 5-4.
The Bulldogs have 'Seaforth and
Zurich yet to play on Sept. 8 to
finish out the round-robin.
