Fifty years ago, on Sept. 4,
Mason Bailey wed Hazel Stewart
in a late summer ceremony at St.
John's Anglican Church, Sarnia.
Rev. Blackwell officiated while
Betty Kennedy and Isabel Stewart
stood up for the bride and Jim Bai-
ley, Charles Stewart and Glen
Thompson witnessed for the groom
This past weekend they celebrat-
xl that anniversary with 40 friends
and family who gathered at their
home.
Mason Bailey, present reeve of
Blyth, is a long-time area farmer ,
with recently developed orchards,
as well as being a realtor.
The Baileys, residents of Blyth,
Blyth
People
have seven children: Larry and
Mary Bailey, Tiverton; Val and
Ken Leibold, Clinton; Mavis and
Bob Morrison, Blyth; Dan and
Sandy Bailey, Stratford; Bonnie
and Roger Riley, Blyth; Tom and
Gail Bailey, Winchester and Clif-
ford, deceased, 17 grandchildren
and three great-grandchildren.
After a social time, a supper was
held at Trinity Anglican Church,
Blyth.
Guests travelled from Port
Huron, Sarnia, Don Mills and Win-
nipeg for the celebration.
In an effort to give tourists more
reason to come to North Huron and
to stay longer, the Blyth Festival is
planning a meeting in September
with interested farm owners to pro-
mote the idea of agri-tourism.
"Agri-tourism is one of the
fastest growing areas of tourism,"
said Keith Roulston, Festival presi-
dent. "For many urban people, a
visit to a farm is an experience as
interesting as a visit to a museum
or theme park."
Agri-tourism programs are
already available in other areas
such as Stratford where tour opera-
tors are encouraged to visit local
farms, for a fee, as part of the expe-
rience of visiting the city and the
Stratford Festival.
"We already have many bus-
loads attending the Blyth Festival
each summer," said Karen Stewart,
Festival general manager. If we can
give these people reason to stay
longer, or if we can attract more
tours to the Festival and the region,
everyone will benefit."
The Festival will be mailing
information about the 1997 season
to tour operators in the next few
weeks and would like to include
information on farms willing to
host tours.
Anyone interested in taking part
in the agri-tourism program will be
invited to an information meeting
at the Festival later this month.
Those interested should contact
Karen Stewart at 523-4345.
