THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 28, 1996 Preparing for winter at Joseph Schneider Haus The Schneiders are preparing for winter, and on weekends throughout September and October, visitors can experience some of the many activities that kept a 19th century farm family busy. The harvesting and preparation of food for the long winter ahead was of prime importance and the Pennsylvania-Germans prepared several unique items from their four-square garden. Sweets and Sours on Aug. 31, Sept. 1 and 2 will fill the kitchen with the smells of -fresh vegetables and cider vinegar as sauerkraut, beet butter and a variety of pickles are prepared. The harvest work continues on Sept. 7 and 8 during Schnibbels and Schnittels when fruits and vegetables are chopped and dried in the family schnitzhaus (drying house). A weekend focusing on the Honey Bee is new at Joseph Schneider Haus in 1996. Bee keeping and the many uses of honey will be explored on Sept. 14 and 15. Hergott Cider Mill and Products will be at the Museum with a portable bee "fly-way" and selling honey products. Folk Artist-in-Residence David Robertson will also be teaching a blacksmithing workshop for adults both Saturday and Sunday. The chore of preserving large quantities of apples for the winter ahead was made easier at an Apple Schnitzing Bee where many hands made the work go quickly. On Sept. 21 and 22 many staff hands will be chopping up a variety of heritage apples and inviting the public to help bee-style. Corn husks and Kernels on Sept. 28 and 29 will feature some recipes for uses of corn. Although corn was not a major part of *the Pennsylvania-German diet in the 1850s, cornmeal cookery was part of the fall and winter diet. Brews and Beverages on Oct. 5 and 6 will' feature some of the most common beverages in the nineteenth century — cordials, mead, spruce beer, cider and wine. On Thanksgiving Weekend, the Schneiders will be Bringing In The Sheaves. The Museum is open Saturday, Sunday and Monday and activities will include basket making, net making, bread baking, and other fall activities making use of wheat and rye cut from the fields. On Saturday morning, from 10 until noon, young and old are invited to drop in for Scarecrow Saturday. Bring old clothing to dress a scarecrow. Flax was grown throughout this area in the 19th century for the purpose of linen production. His prodigious talent ravaged by time and alcohol, the once-great classical actor and matinee idol struggles with his failing memory in an attempt to recreate his legendary performance as Richard III.
