Leading off this week's new releases is Rogers & Hammerstein: The
sound of Movies e`*** (A & E - $24.95 or less) an interesting and hugely
entertaining overview of their careers with particular attention paid to the
film versions of their ground breaking Broadway musicals. The program is
hosted by Shirley Jones, the star of both Oklahoma and Carousel, and
features rare behind-the-scenes footage, numerous interviews and a
marvelous selection of musical numbers presented in their original
widescreen versions. Rgcommended. (Unrated)
Speaking of widescreen, as I mentioned last week Rogers and
Hanunerstein's biggest movie success, The Sound of Music is also now on
store shelves for $22.95 or less in a digitally mastered THX version.
Among the other new releases you may want to check out is Mary Reilly
(Columbia/Tristar), another telling of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde this time
seen through the eyes of his housekeeper. The cast includes Julia Roberts,
John Malkovich and Glenn Close. (Rated 14A)
Stephen King fans will no doubt want to see Sometimes They Come
Back Again (Malofilm) the sequel to the popular original. The story
involves a man who returns to his hometown after the death of his mother
only to find out he must battle evil forces to save his teenage daughter.
(Rated R)
A topnotch cast (Nick Nolte, Chazz Palminteri, Melanie Griffith,
Michael Madsen, Chris Penn and John Malkovich) headline Mulholland
Falls (MGM/UA), a crime thriller set in 1950s Los Angeles focusing on
an elite squad of cops who bring the bad guys to justice their way. (Rated
14A) ,
In case you missed Gulliver's Travels when it was broadcast recently
now you can catch up with it on video. The new version stars Ted Danson
and features great special effects not to mention very good reviews to
boot. (Unrated) '
Kids will probably want to see All Dogs Go To Heaven 2 (MGM/UA -
$24.95 or less) as our canine hero tires of doggy heaven and jumps at the
chance to return to this mortal coil to help retrieve Gabriel's lost trumpet.
Woof, Woof! (Rated G)
In the classics department Warner Brothers is offering The Great Race
($19.95 or less) starring Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, Peter Falk and
Natalie Wood in a newly remastered pan and scan version. If you want it
in the original widescreen format you'll have to watch for the laserdisc.
Mel Gibson's epic Oscar winning Braveheart is now available for under
$25 in both widescreen and pan and scan versions.

Preparing for winter at Joseph Schneider Haus
The Schneiders are preparing for
winter, and on weekends
throughout September and October,
visitors can experience some of the
many activities that kept a 19th
century farm family busy. The
harvesting and preparation of food
for the long winter ahead was of
prime importance and the
Pennsylvania-Germans prepared
several unique items from their
four-square garden.
Sweets and Sours on Aug. 31,
Sept. 1 and 2 will fill the kitchen
with the smells of -fresh vegetables
and cider vinegar as sauerkraut,
beet butter and a variety of pickles
are prepared.
The harvest work continues on
Sept. 7 and 8 during Schnibbels
and Schnittels when fruits and
vegetables are chopped and dried in
the family schnitzhaus (drying
house).
A weekend focusing on the
Honey Bee is new at Joseph
Schneider Haus in 1996. Bee
keeping and the many uses of
honey will be explored on Sept. 14
and 15. Hergott Cider Mill and
Products will be at the Museum
with a portable bee "fly-way" and
selling honey products.
Folk Artist-in-Residence David
Robertson will also be teaching a
blacksmithing workshop for adults
both Saturday and Sunday.
The chore of preserving large
quantities of apples for the winter
ahead was made easier at an Apple
Schnitzing Bee where many hands
made the work go quickly. On
Sept. 21 and 22 many staff hands
will be chopping up a variety of
heritage apples and inviting the
public to help bee-style.
Corn husks and Kernels on Sept.
28 and 29 will feature some recipes
for uses of corn. Although corn was
not a major part of *the
Pennsylvania-German diet in the
1850s, cornmeal cookery was part
of the fall and winter diet.
Brews and Beverages on Oct. 5
and 6 will' feature some of the most
common beverages in the
nineteenth century — cordials,
mead, spruce beer, cider and wine.
On Thanksgiving Weekend, the
Schneiders will be Bringing In The
Sheaves. The Museum is open
Saturday, Sunday and Monday and
activities will include basket
making, net making, bread baking,
and other fall activities making use
of wheat and rye cut from the
fields.
On Saturday morning, from 10
until noon, young and old are
invited to drop in for Scarecrow
Saturday. Bring old clothing to
dress a scarecrow.

his career. His prodigious talent
ravaged by time and alcohol, the
once-great classical actor and
matinee idol struggles with his
failing memory in an attempt to
recreate his legendary performance
as Richard III. As he reflects on his
chaotic and colourful life — his
upbringing as a member of
America's most celebrated
theatrical family, his four marriages
and many romantic liaisons, his
