Huron Cty. Plowing Match builds toward 1999
By Janice Becker
Warm weather and sunny skies
brought out more than 500 people
to the Huron County Plowing
Match, Aug 22 and 23, held at the
McKijlop Twp. farm of Neil and
Marie McGavin.
There was a great turnout, said
Plowmen Association Secretary
Marie Hicknell, and it is hoped the
momentum will build towards the
International Plowing Match in
Huron County in 1999.
The barbecued pork chop lun-
cheon drew approximately 200
hungry plowers and entertainers
who put on a great show for visi-
tors.
A new idea, and a hit, at this
year's match was a garden tractor
obstacle course for the youngsters.
Huron County's Queen of the
Furrow is Julie Miller, daughter of
Bruce and Diane Miller of RR2,
Bayfield. Miller, who attends the
University of Guelph, is studying
agriculture business.
In the plowing competition: Paul
Dodds of RR1, Seaforth took the
Senior Plowmen Championship;
Brian McGavin of RR4, Walton,
Reserve Senior Champion; Pat
O'Rourke, Dublin, Junior Champi-
on; Jason Hugill, Seaforth, Reserve
Junior Champion; Fred Anderson,
Kippen, Walking Plow; Ross Gor-
don Award for the best crown on.
junior day, Adam Koehler of Wal-
ton and Steve Speller of Ailsa
Craig won for most points by and
out-of-county plowmen (plaque
donated by Don Dodds).
The horseshoe pitching competi-
tion was controlled by two husband
and wife teams from the Kippen
area. Jack and Lia Snell took first
and Bill and Norma Coleman cap-
tured second. The wins allow the
pairs to advance to the International
Plowing Match next month.
Watch the wagon
Youngsters had the opportunity to show off their driving
skills during the garden tractor obstacle course at the
Huron County Plowing Match.
Bygone days
It was not just horsepower, but horse power which allowed plowmen to compete in the
plowing competitions at the Huron County Plowing Match, Aug. 22 and 23. Well-trained
teams pulled both walking plows and sulkies in the contests.
