Plowing Match builds toward 1999 By Janice Becker Warm weather and sunny skies brought out more than 500 people to the Huron County Plowing Match, Aug 22 and 23, held at the McKijlop Twp. farm of Neil and Marie McGavin. There was a great turnout, said Plowmen Association Secretary Marie Hicknell, and it is hoped the momentum will build towards the International Plowing Match in Huron County in 1999. The barbecued pork chop lun- cheon drew approximately 200 hungry plowers and entertainers who put on a great show for visi- tors. A new idea, and a hit, at this year's match was a garden tractor obstacle course for the youngsters. Huron County's Queen of the Furrow is Julie Miller, daughter of Bruce and Diane Miller of RR2, Bayfield. Miller, who attends the University of Guelph, is studying agriculture business. In the plowing competition: Paul Dodds of RR1, Seaforth took the Senior Plowmen Championship; Brian McGavin of RR4, Walton, Reserve Senior Champion; Pat O'Rourke, Dublin, Junior Champi- on; Jason Hugill, Seaforth, Reserve Junior Champion; Fred Anderson, Kippen, Walking Plow; Ross Gor- don Award for the best crown on. junior day, Adam Koehler of Wal- ton and Steve Speller of Ailsa Craig won for most points by and out-of-county plowmen (plaque donated by Don Dodds). The horseshoe pitching competi- tion was controlled by two husband and wife teams from the Kippen area. Jack and Lia Snell took first and Bill and Norma Coleman cap- tured second. The wins allow the pairs to advance to the International Plowing Match next month. Bygone days It was not just horsepower,but horse power which allowed plowmen to compete in the plowing competitions at the Huron County Plowing Match, Aug. 22 and 23. Well-trained teams pulled both walking plows and sulkies in the contests. Paul Dodds earns Perth plowing championship The Perth County Plowing Match was held on the farm Warden John Van Bakel on Sat., Aug. 24. Fifty- five lands were plowed in the tractor classes and there were 56 entries in the specialty classes.
