The youngster was playing in Blyth this past Saturday at the Mite tournament. The Blyth Mite Boys continued their winning ways in the year-end tournament, Aug 24. Nothing held them back when they met Bayfield in the first match of the day. Ryan McClinchey contributed a triple, doubles went to Raymond deBoer and Josh Albrechtas with Dan Cullen, Justin Peters, Darcey Cook and Jamie Ross tapping_ sin- gles for a six-run attack. Bayfield countered with one in The Brussels Bulldogs played off against the Walton Brewers this past week in their first round of the Huron County Fastball League playoffs. The first game saw Dave Smith matched up against Terry Elligsen. Both pitchers had 10 strikeouts while allowing four hits and one walk. Walton scored the only run of the game in the fourth inning, when Mite Girls Tri-County champs Belgrave Mite Girls took the Tri- County Championship in two games straight when they defeated Walton 19-6, Aug. 19. The girls were up for the contest when they went to bat in the first, scoring six runs with the help of a Jenna Howatt double. With Nicole Procter on the mound for the first and second, Walton eked out four runs while she struck out three in the first and one in the second. Belgrave notched six more through the middle two innings. Nicole Meier, Michelle Cook, Nicole Procter, Jenna Howatt and Emily Elston smacked doubles while Kristen Palmer added a sin- gle. Consistent hitting in the fourth allowed Belgrave to shutout the opposition, making a comeback win impossible. Seven runs put the game out of reach. A double by Procter brought in Elizabeth Askes, Palmer's single pushed Procter home, an Elston triple scored Palmer and singles by Ashley Gaunt, Coral Nicholson, Meier tallied the remaining base runners. A homer by Cook com- pleted the inning. the bottom of the first. McClinchey pitched two strike- outs with first base player Darcey Cook nabbing a grounder for the third out. The game broke open in the top of the second when the squad struck for nine runs. McClinchey, Peters and Cullen tattooed homers; Cook and Nick Stryker blasted triples and deBoer nubbcd a single. With McClinchey then Ross on the mound, Blyth pitchers struck out three, allowing only one run. It would turn out to be Bayfield's final tally. Blyth never let up, smashing eight more runs in the third and fourth innings for a 31-2 victory. Other hits accumulated as fol- lows: McClinchey, homerun (two); Peters, homerun (two); deBoer, homerun, single; Cullen, homerun; Cook, homerun; Albrechtas, home- run, triple; Stryker, homerun and Ross triple. Korey Machan did a great job behind the plate. The win, putting them on the A side for the tournament, brought them up against the much tougher Colborne 2 squad. Blyth bats were stilled when a single by Cullen and a follow-up double by Peters brought in their only run of the inning. Colborne took the early lead in the bottom of the frame after Peters couldn't pitch out of a tight spot and left the bases loaded for Ross when he took the mound. With one Steve Knight got on with a single then was hit home by Roger Humphries. Bob Steiss and Andrew McCutcheon started the second game for their respective teams. Steiss threw seven strikeouts, allowed seven hits, one walk and three runs. McCutcheon had four strikeouts, allowed four hits, one walk and two runs before being relieved by Smith in the third inning. Smith had six strikeouts and allowed two walks. Walton scored early in the third inning with Steiss and Terry Robinson getting on with singles, before Steve Knight doubled them home. The Bulldogs were kept quiet until the sixth inning, when Dean Rutledge led off with a double. McCutcheon followed with a triple, then Greg Mulvey came off the bench to hit a game winning homerun. This tied the series at one out, a great double play got Blyth out of the inning. A ball, sharply hit back to the pitcher was grabbed and thrown to first base player Cook, for the second out. He quickly tossed to home. Back catch Machan relayed the ball to third where McClinchey tagged the runner out. Blyth allowed four runs. Held off the pads in the second, the only run scored on a solo homer by deBoer. Ross pitched a strong inning, earning three strikeouts. Down 4-2, Cullen belted a home- run in the third to bring the team to within one . With one out and the bases load- ed, Stryker came up with the play of the game, catching a high fly ball in left field, holding all runners on their base. Ross got the third out on strikes. Blyth was unable to mount an attack with three up and three down in the fourth, fifth and while Col- borne added two more. Machan was again strong behind the plate, making good throws throughout the game. The 6-3 loss put the team out of the tournament, but the game was exciting and the boys did a great job. With a 13-4 season, the Blyth Mites did themselves proud. The team and their parents are grateful to Doug McClinchey and Jeff Peters for their coaching. The boys learned a lot, had fun and improved greatly throughout the year. game apiece. Tied one game apiece this set the stage for a third deciding game Mite Watson pitched for the Bulldogs against Scott Leonhardt. Watson pitched four strikeouts and allowed eight hits and three runs. In five and half innings of play Leonhardt pitched 11 strikeouts and allowed only one hit. Walton got off to an early start in the first inning with Knight and Elligsen getting on board with singles. Rick McDonald hit them home opening up a 2 - 0 lead. There was very little action in the game until the sixth inning when Walton's Elligsen, McDonald and Nolan all scored. The Bulldogs never mounted- any serious offense. The Walton Brewers go on to play in the A side of the playoffs and the Bulldogs play a round- robin series in the B side of the playoffs. In a battle to decide who will play Newton for the tournament championship two games for the Brussels Bantam Bs were needed. The first encounter at Palmerston resulted in a 4-4 draw. The game was a very physical one with a yellow card being given to a Palmerston player and a number of players being cautioned on rough play. Palmerston took the lead but Brussels came right back on a goal by Terry Nichol. The goal involved a three-way passing play from Andrew Grant and Terry Brown. Brown scored the second goal on a pass from Kirk Baillie. The teams ended the half tied. In the second half Terry Brown broke through the Palmerston defenses and scored to put Brussels in the lead. Brussels' keeper Bronwyn Dunbar was kept busy as Palmerston tried to tie the game. As darkness fell Palmerston was able to score two quick goals. In an effort to tie the game Brussels centre halfs Baillie and Adam Carr led the attack. Scott Clarkson came up from his full Saturday night in Walton the Huron County All-Stars defeated the Goderich Grizzlies 2-0. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth, where Jason Kieffer walked, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Ron Strome. A delayed steal by Steve Knight, in a third and first situation, then allowed Strome to steal home for the second run. The all-Stars pitching staff of Scott Leonhardt, Kieffer and Dave back position and took the throw-in from the right side of the field. The ball got over over to Matthew Aldaz, who slipped in the tying goal. It was too dark for a shoot-out so it was decided that a second game would be played. In the second game which was played at Wallace, Brussels' Terry Brown opened the scoring on a hard shot into the right hand corner. Brussels' defenses were formidable with Pat Brown and Scott Clarkson keeping the opposition away from the goal. Can and Matthew Aldaz acted as sweepers and played both offense and defense. In the second half Palmerston - was able to tie the game. As the game progressed, Brussels' lack of substitutes showed as Palmerston kept pressing. In a scramble in front of the net Dunbar could not keep the ball out. Palmerston went ahead and with Palmerston in a four-man defensive line-up Brussels could not break through. The game ended with Palmerston winning 2-1. Smith dominated Goderich allow- ing only four batters to reach base. Team members included Steve and Brad Knight, Blaine Marks and Scott Leonhardt of Walton; Tim Fritz, Ken Higgins, Ron Strome and Murray Pipe of the Tigers; Jason Kieffer and Mike Bromley from Belgrave; Mark McNichol from Seaforth and Dave Smith and Greg Mulvey of the Bulldogs. The team was coached by Rick McDonald of Walton, assisted by Hugh Nichol of the Tigers. Brewers nip Bulldogs 1-0 All-Stars defeat Grizzlies
