Like sitting ducks
The hot, humid weather drew a large crowd to Brussels
dam, July 14, to watch and assist with the Brussels Lions
annual duck race fundraiser. Several youths ventured into
the river to help Lions members free stranded ducks as
they floated downstream towards the finish line.

There were accolades from all
corners when former Liberal MPP
for Huron and Bruce Counties,
Murray Elston and his family were
honoured at an appreciation night,
recently, at the Mildmay Carrick
Recreation Complex.
Elston served 13 and a half years
in provincial politics until he lost a
bid for the Liberal leadership, by
nine votes to Lyn' McLeod, in the
1992 race. He also recently turned
down the offer at a second run.
"You should not spend time wor-
rying about things that are beyond
you. But you should consider what
you can do today and the things
that are available to you tomor-
row," said Elston to the 300 sup-
porters gathered.
In keeping with Elston's philoso-
phy of looking ahead, the Bruce
Liberal Association, represented by
President Ron Batte, presented the
family with a grandfather clock.
Other dignitaries in attendance
included former premier David
Peterson, whom Elston served
under, past and present MPPs and
MPs, as well as leadership hopefuls
Accolades for Elston
at appreciation night
Lawrence MPP Joe Cordiano,
Downsview MPP Anna Marie
Catrilla, Windsor-Walkerville MPP
Dwight Duncan and Kingston and
the Islands MPP John Gerritson.
Regards were also received from
Prime Minister Jean Chretien, Pre-
mier Mike Harris, Sheila Copps-
and others.
During his tenure at Queen's
Park, Elston held the health portfo-
lio during the time of the doctors'
strike over legislation to end extra
billing. The situation would not
have turned out the way it did
except for the fact that the govern-
ment had a "minister of health with
the strength of character; the back-
bone and the determination and
capacity to explain the position,"
said Peterson.
Stating he had been the benefi-
ciary of some of the most exciting
times in Ontario politics, Elston
thanked supporters for voting for
an unknown, Morris Twp. lawyer
in 1981.
Elston is now president of
Ontario Interlink in Kincardine
Twp.

to know, beyond a doubt, that the
driver had not been involved with
any kind of drugs or alcohol before
the accident. I do not know this
because drawing blood for testing
cannot be done unless the police
officer has reason to suspect drug
or alcohol use.
Tell me, what would make a
police officer suspect drug use? I
know if alcohol was used they
could smell the alcohol, unless it
was vodka then they could not —
what of that? We need Section 256
of the Criminal Code changed to
say, "When there has been a death
in an accident — blood shall be
drawn from both drivers and tested
for drugs and alcohol." To know
without a doubt if a mind altering
substance has been used, Section
256 of the Criminal Code needs to
be brought up to the day and age
we live in.
We ,no longer live in a time
where just alcohol is a mind
altering duig. We have cocaine,
marijuana, speed and a slew of
other drugs that are being used very
freely and some along with alcohol.
I hear that we are looking at
making some changes to our
Justice System. Certainly, Section
256 should be on the list. I am sure
my family is not alone in this
demand. If you are wanting the
same done, I ask you to please
write to:
Honorable Allan Rock
Minister of Justice
3rd Floor Justice Building
231 Wellington Street
Ottawa, Ontario KIA OH8
Send a postcard saying that we
need automatic blood sampling for
both drivers when there has been a
death involved in an accident.
Nothing will change unless we get
together to make it change.
Yours truly,
Mrs. Alice Ward.
