THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JULY 10, 1996 PAGE 21.

Talks begin on Integrated Community Network
The Huron County Board of
Education and the Ontario Ministry
of Agriculture, Food and Rural
Affairs (OMAFRA) co-hosted a
meeting with approximately 20
community representatives to
discuss the potential for establish-
ing an 'Integrated Community
Network' (ICN) to serve the needs
of various community and private
sector interests throughout Huron
County. The July 3 meeting was
attended by representatives of the
Huron County hospital/health,
municipal government, social
services, education, provincial
agency and the private sectors.
Resource assistance was
provided by Janet Baird-Jackson,
for the board of education, Jane
Muegge, for OMAFRA, and
Miguel Ferreira representing Bell
Global Solutions.
An 'Integrated Community
Network' would permit various
partners and Huron County
participants to communicate by
sharing access to technology
systems. Participants would work
together to form an integrated
network serving individual, group
and community needs. Each sector
would be able to communicate
within and among its own
participants and would be able to
interconnect with other groups
electronically.
A primary purpose of an ICN
would be to facilitate more
efficient, cost-effective communi-
cation to meet the specific needs of
each participating group. For
example, within the health
community, offices and agencies
could share medical data and test
results in a secure environment,
could provide local tele-medicine
support from specialists located
elsewhere, could enhance homecare
support and provide symptom
monitoring.
In the government sector, public
records can become more
accessible, tourism and housing
information can be shared and
promoted, contract tenders,
employment opportunities and
business transactions could be
facilitated.
In the education sector, distance
learning can bring college and
university courses closer to home,
can maintain low enrolment course
offerings in local schools, can
provide access to library and
learning resources and extend
parent involvement with schools.
The object will be to work
together and share resources to
provide such services in an
environment of reduced and further
reducing funding.
Several examples of current
initiatives were shared by Beth
Ross, Huron County librarian, Paul
Nichols, Huron Business Centre in
Seaforth, Muegge, OMAFRA, Paul
Carroll, director of education,
HCBE and Janice Dunbar on behalf
of the Huron Employment
Resource Centre.
A steering committee to explore
next steps has been established.
Members are: Ken Nix, County of
Huron, Bonnie LaFontaine,
Colborne Twp., Dorothy Medd,
Seaforth Hospital, Diane Aiken,
Huron County Health Unit, Beth
