COMING EVENTS
Proud to be Canadian
By Erin Roulston
What does it mean to you to be
Canadian?
To me it's taking special notice
when I learn that someone famous
is Canadian, like Jim Carrey. It's
cheering for the Canadian Olympic
athletes like Silken Laumen and
Donovan Bailey and it's taking
pride in the fact that Canada is
known as a polite and reserved
country.
I love so much about our country.
I love our multiculturalism, our
bilingualism, our imperfect
government. I love that we stretch
from the Atlantic to the Pacific. I
love our national anthem, our
weather, our wildlife.
I can't understand it when others,
born and raised in Canada, just like
me, say that Canada "sucks" and
that Americans are cool.
It angers me when American TV
shows crack jokes about our
beautiful country. One that I heard
just the other night was . .. "Maybe
it's some kind of government
conspiracy, like UFO's or ...
Canada."
And then there are the jokes they
didn't intend to be funny; like
America OnLine Canada. What
could be more ridiculous? Not only
that, but AOL Canada is just one
example of American companies
that try to sweet talk Canadian
consumers and steal business from
good Canadian companies. When
people give their money to these
American companies, the money
goes to obviously, the States, as
opposed to the money going back
into the community if you had
spent it at a Canadian store.
And of course it breaks my heart
to think that Quebec would want to
leave our beautiful nation. I
understand they believe they have
been treated unfairly in the past,
and to a smaller extent still are
treated poorly. Sometimes the rest
of the country forgets how different
the culture is in Quebec. I would be
the last person to stop them if they
had voted to separate, if they are
unhappy here it's not fair for them-
to stay. But it would be so sad to
see them go.
I've never been to Quebec, but
I'm_aching to go. It's such a
beautiful province with its old
buildings, so I've heard. I'm glad
that when I do visit I won't have to
cross any national borders.
Another thing I love about this
country is our healthcare system.
There have been a lot of health
problems in my family lately and if
it weren't for 0I-HP we'd be living
on the streets. It is such a great
system and I can't believe that the
government would want to change
it. I pity the Americans and their
inadequate system. A person can
spend hundreds on a broken arm.
Canada has always been my
home, and I'm sure it always will
be. And no matter where I go I'll be
proud to call myself a Canadian.

Finally, it's here. After waiting
for 10 months, anticipating the fun,
eagerly awaiting the freedom,
summer is here.
No more sitting through endless
classes in a boring, jail-like
classroom, trying to catch up on
your sleep (which is very hard to
do in those uncomfortable desks)
without the teacher noticing that
you are dozing off. No more
getting up early in the morning and
going to bed early at night.
And best of all, no more
homework! We don't even have to
think for another two months!
So here we are, the first week of
summer holidays. You finally
crawl out of bed at 11 or so, you
look out the window; and it's
raining. You phone your friends to
see if they want to come over, and

AAHH! You're bored mindless!
Well, we surveyed students from

like to go in the summer when
boredom sets in.

By Ashley Gropp
Teenagers often wonder about
what to do for a future career. Each
one has a different idea of what the
"perfect" job is, but all hope to get
paid for doing what they enjoy
most.
Actor and musician Raoul
Bhaneja of Blyth Festival's
Barndance Live said acting would
probably be his first love, although
music comes in a close second.
Raoul was raised in Ottawa. He
is 22 years old, and, in May, he
graduated from the National
Theatre School. There he took a
variety of classes, which generally
all focused on acting.
Raoul's interest in both acting
and music started when he was 11
or 12 years old, he says. He plays
the harmonica and the guitar.
The blues is his favourite kind of
music. Because of this, "Last
Minute," the band he was in during
high school, played blues as well as
their original music. Since he has
been working on Barndance, he
says, he has developed a liking for
old country music.
In 1993, at the Ottawa
Shakespeare Festival, he appeared
in Macbeth and The Tempest. Last
year, he co-produced and co-starred
in a national Fringe Festival tour of
a twisted love story, Sad Surgeon.
Barndance is a unique and
enjoyable experience for him, he
says, as the six cast members
worked together on creating the
dialogue and the scenes. It was also
a difficult task to accomplish.
He said that it is extremely
rewarding when the audience
enjoys the performance as it makes
it worth it.
