Graduation Crass of 1996
EWPS teacher remembered as gentle, kind
Continued from page 16
a whole new section of East
Wawanosh. Mrs. Mathers was kind
and gentle. At the Christmas
concert our class put on a small
musical to the tune of "Mary had a
Baby" in which I got the role of
Mary. That night I learned an
important lesson: never ride a
donkey in a long robe.
As always spring and summer
passed and fall came with a new
teacher, a new classroom and new
things to learn. It was Grade 4 with
Mr. Fisher. Those were the days of
the circus recorders and writing
poetry with Debbie Green.
The next year was different
because then we were split up into
two classes —ours with Mr. Kerr
and the other with Mrs. Evers and
Mrs. Thorpe-Hearne. But we could
still get together at noon hour and
recesses. Mr. Kerr was said to be a
toughy who made you do your best.
But in actuality, after getting to
know Mr. Kerr, you found him to
be a good friend who expected your
best and who would forgive you if
you occasionally forgot things.
These were days of the
Thresher's Reunion, the Children's
Festival and Joseph and the
Technicolor Dream Coat.
As always the year went quickly
and soon we were in Grade 6
together again.
We also were being taught by
almost the entire staff here at
EWPS: Mademoiselle Reed for
French, Mrs. Gross for history and
English, Mr. Bartlett for science,
Mrs. Daer for social studies and
Mr. Scott for math, phys ed and the
occasional lecture for some of us.
It was a good year and it was
almost over when surprising news
came that our fellow classmate,
Tim Procter, would be moving. So
we said our good-byes and good
lucks, not knowing he would return
the following year.
Once again summer passed and
fall came with Mr. Fisher for Grade
7. This year seemed to draw us
together as a group of friends. In

the icy slopes. Some of us managed
while some of us ..., well let's not
get into that.
Speaking of snow, another
enjoyable venture was snow-
shoeing. This is the second time
our Australian teacher had a very
close encounter with snow. By the
time we got to the school, we had
icicles hanging from our nose.
Again this year we expanded our
visions as we attended the
Technology 21 Centre. From
playing with lego to experimenting
with computer technology, we did
it all. And for parents out there who
wonder how we can do all this neat
stuff with the computer, well now
you know, welcome to the 90s.
We learned how violent the
world was in World War 1 and 2.
We learned all this as we took a trip
to the war museum in Goderich.
Our last outing of the year was
by far the most exciting field trip of
all. We now know how you parents
felt when you were just a tiny tot,
June we took a trip to the Blue
Mountain Resort in Collingwood. It
was a very eventful trip upon which
many was a very successful
experience at the end of a very
successful year, with our teacher
Mr. B. who helped us mature and
gain the knowledge to carry us
through our secondary school
years.
Finally I would like to mention
as we travelled back in time, and
visited Black Creek Pioneer
Village. Boy we're glad we're in the
90s and not back in the 2s. We
went from the 2s back to the 92s as
we went to Toronto to Wonderland.
(Differ-ent). Here we enjoyed
thrilling rides and lots of water. A
great way to end the year. These
are just some of the trips that were
enjoyed by both the Grade 8s and
the Grade 7s.
The very first day of school plays
a very important roll for us Grade
8s to becoming Grade 9s. You no
longer have the respect of being the
oldest in the school, you have to
start at the beginning and work our
way up to the respect of the
younger students. I will give you a
few points of advice to follow.
Now I have never been to high
school but this is what I heard. I
heard it through the grapevine.
Now before I break into a song,
let's get on with that advise.
Rule #1: Don't skip too many
classes. You'll get your first A on
the changes for the upcoming year.
Our Principal Ken Scott will be
retiring after many successful years
here at East Wawanosh Public
School and we wish him all the
best in the future (and fewer soccer
injuries hopefully). Also Jennifer
Reed and Bernice Gross will be
transferring to Blyth Public School.
We shall miss all these staff
members and wish them the best of
your report card and your parents
will wonder how that happened,
until they find out it stands for
Absent.
Rule #2: Don't get into too many
fights. Most students are bigger
than you and for us short people, all
students are bigger than us. So back
off.
Rule #3: Don't get into too much
trouble. You tend to get sick of the
chair in the office which is very
uncomfortable.
Rule #4: For the Grade 8 girls,
you thought the pickings of us
Grade 8 boys were good. Wait until
you get to Grade 9.
Rule #5: For us Grade 8 guys,
keep your tongue and your drool in
your mouth, for the custodian sake
I mean all those girls, WOW.
In all seriousness, as you enter
into high school, we know how
luck.
And as the soft summer winds
blow away and are replaced with
the cool windy days of fall the
classes will rotate, the School Fair
will come and the class of '96 will
be on a new chapter of their lives in
Secondary School.
Thank you and good luck to all
the graduates in all the years to
come!
important those friends are, so
please pick them carefully.
I know elementary school was
very good for me and I know that it
was good for my fellow graduates
as we together broadened our
minds from tiny tots to young
teenagers. Let us continue to
broaden our minds in high school
as we turn from adolescence into
young adults. Let us remember the
Hullett logo "Go for Gold" as we
go on with our lives.
Thanks to all those teachers who
have dedicated all their time to us.
Thanks to the graduates who were
there when we needed each other.
Congratulations, continue to live
long, and drink lots . . . of milk! (to
keep your bones strong and your
teeth white).
Best wishes and good luck in the
future.
