Where has the time gone, asks student
By Jeff Klasen
It is quite an honour for me to be
up here tonight to represent my
fellow graduates. Yes this is it, my
fellow graduates, the Grade 8 student
body in one person, me! rietty short
huh?
If it wasn't for my peers or fellow
graduates, I wouldn't be up here, I
would be down there and someone
else would be up here talking about
something totally different. The
reason for this is that my fellow
Grade 8s voted
me to be the
valedictorian for
the 95/96 year.
I am a B
average student.
I guess I'm
respected, and
they say that I
am good at
speaking in front
of a whole bunch of people. I get Bs
on my report card, but does that make
me a B average student, I often
wonder if I am respected, because in
my years here at Hullett I don't recall
any one calling me "Mr." or "Sir" or
how about "Your Honour." I am up
here talking in front of a whole bunch
of people, but does that keep me from
perspiring.
I have only been here for two
years, Grade 7 and Grade 8. And I'll
have to admit, that out of the five
schools that I've been to, Hullett
Central has been the coolest. The
teachers are cool, the students are
cool, the building is cool, the
blackboards are cool, this podium is
cool, my desk is cool, the little bug
crawling over there is cool,
everything is cool.
Enough about me, let's talk about
my fellow graduates. We made it.
Can you believe it? This day is
actually here! I mean, in Grade 5 we
were saying, "I can't wait to
graduate," but as this day ends we
will have officially graduated, and
can say, 'Oh, no! I'm in high school".
But have you stopped to wonder
where the time was gone? We will
leave with tears in our eyes, we wish
each other best of luck as we enter
into the real world. As we look back
at this past year, we can see that we
have become closer, for some of us,
too close. We've learned to deal with
each other, we've shared our feelings
with each other, and of course we
also learned from our studies.
During our years at Hullett we
have developed good friends as well
as friendships that have gone bad.
We've had our good times, and we've
had our bad. Despite all this, from
what I've heard we all have enjoyed
our stay at Hullett Central. Well that's
what the majority said.
For the 95/96 year we the grade 8s,
had to deal with some changes. We
had to deal with being separated from
each other. I can't understand, why!
Thirty-six grade 8s in one classroom,
that's not too much to handle for one
teacher, is it? Well needless to say
they split us up with ... the Grade 7s.
Oh yes all of us were furious, but we
had to adjust to them and deal with
their immaturity. Pretty soon we
forgot about them, and didn't listen to
them. In fact, some of us made
friends with them.
Two Grade 8 classes, but three
Grade 8 teachers. Weird it may seem.
One of the three teachers is Mr. T.
Gee what does that 'T' stand for
anyway? Does it stand for "terrific?"
or "terrible?" Oh yes it finally comes
to me, (My mind seems to be a bit
slow today). It stands for Talbot!
What
a teacher
What a great teacher!) Or we could
plainly call him, a sports freak.
Famous saying: "It's a high fly ball
over the centrefield fence!"
Mr. Medd was another Grade 8
teacher. I think we must have been a
little too hard on him, because he
lasted only half the school year, and
left to teach on the other side of the
world for a year. His greatest
punishment was Math sheets.
Famous saying, "You! Math sheets!"
Things were going just fine when
we had to adjust to something else.
Our third, Grade 8 teacher, Mrs.
Moore. She must have really wanted
to straighten us out. She came from
halfway around the world. What a
change. Mr. Medd a man, Mrs.
Moore a woman. Mr. Medd, gum
chewing allowed. Mrs. Moore no
gum chewing. They're even spelled
differently. And oh that accent.
Famous saying "Oh don't ruin it for
the rest of the class."
Famous sayings of some of the
other teachers and staff members we
had to deal with this year were:
Madame Rea: "Bonjour classe". Mrs.
Stennett: "Away!" Mr. Gingerich:
"Now if you could log into your
computers." Mr. Li-vprmore:
"Intermural volleyball will be starting
next week," Mrs. Bosman: "No, no,
you're walkirig too fast, you want to
gecthis play to work out, Right!"
Mrs. Johnston (smile) "Ohh Grade
8s, could you please sit in your
desks." Mrs. Pletch: "I'm sorry, the
library is closed." Mr. Sanders:
"Grade 3, sit down." Mrs. Kemp:
"O.K. kindergarten, in a straight line
please." Mrs. White: "O.K. class, tell
me about the egg." Mrs. Elliot:
"Could you please tone it down a bit,
we're trying to work here." Mr..
Jewitt: "If you step into my office,
please." Mrs. Walters: "That's it, I've
had it with school, I'm retiring!" Mrs.
Kolkman, "So who's away today."
Mr. Bosman: "Don't step there, it's
just washed." Mrs. Charlebois (our
school nurse) "Roll-up your sleeve."
All the supply teachers: "Hi, I'm ..."
and all the parent helpers: "Now we
have made plans to install a
swimming pool in the Grade 8
room."
This year Grade 8s had many
exciting excursions from going to
museums to going to Wonderland.
Whatever the trip, we all had a great
time (we got to miss classes too.) It is
not only missing class that amuses
us, it is also the ability to learn from
these experiences. Like the ability to
stand on our skis as we tumbled on
