East Wawanosh students remember
By Colleen Van Camp
It was 1986 and I was five. My
brother and sister were going to
grades one and three. I was so excited
to finally be going to school
It was the first day of kindergarten
and we were at the end of the
laneway. My mom shed tears, a big
yellow bus stopped in front of us and
I suddenly remembered how my
brother and sister had told me the bus
driver would yell at you simply
because you were jumping on the
seats and running down the aisle!
Graduates, Staff, Parents...
I came up to the steps and when
you're only two and a half feet tall,
the top step is even with your head.
As I reached it, it was frightening to
turn and face a bus full of strangers,
even if I hadn't realized that one of
them was Justin Black! I made my
way to my seat with my big sister and
on my way past the bus driver gave
me a kind hello. Already things didn't
seem so bad.
Shortly after we arrived at school
we were warmly welcomed -into Mrs
Wilson's class. Days led to weeks and
weeks to months. Mrs. Wilson was
always kind and caring until one day
we were being especially naughty
and Mrs. Wilson became so
frustrated she broke her pointer in
two. But Mrs. Wilson got a new
pointer and things went smoothly
from then on.
At graduation
we had lots of
fun presenting a
play about a
robot, our class
and our teacher
and I had the
role of the
teacher. Some of
the staff realized
that for a kindergarten student I was
very talkative.
Soon we were in Grade 1 with Mrs.
Brydges, learning about warm
fuzzies, cold pricklies and sitting in
the cushy helper's chair. Every
morning Mrs. Brydges was a warm
fuzzy. Then one day we received a
cold prickly, Mrs. Brydges was
having an operation and would
probably not be back for the rest of
the year. But Mrs. Edgar took over
and soon things were back on track.
The year went quickly and soon we
were in Mrs. Hessels' class.
Mrs. Hessels was kind but got the
work done. This year went quickly
also. We learned to add, subtract and
print properly.
Our Grade 3 year was Mrs.
Mailers in a brand new classroom in
