The Citizen, 1996-07-03, Page 250 years together Marg and Sam Sweeney celebrated 50 years of marriage at an open house in Melville Presbyterian Church, Brussels on Saturday. Sweeneys mark 50th Sister Betty Cardiff, Noble Grand opened the meeting of Morning Star Lodge with the opening ceremonies. Following the secretary's and treasurer's report, Laura Barbour Vice Grand reported on the sick. A number of members went to Seaforth and visited Jenny Turnbull on her 98th birthday. It was reported that Mary Elliott is home and feeling much better. Lois McCutcheon and Jane Hall were delegates to the Rebekah Assembly in Toronto. They gave very good reports. Morning Star Lodge is proud to have Rene Richmond as president for 1996-97. A committee was appointed to update "Our Book of Memories". DDP Rene presented Barb McCutcheon's 25 year jewel to Lois McCutcheon. This meeting is the last one until fall. The September meeting will open with a pot luck supper at 6:30 p.m. The annual church service was held on June 30 at Melville Presbyterian Church with a good attendance of Oddfellows and Rebekahs. Scriptures were read by Dave McCutcheon and Laura Barbour. Lunch followed at the lodge hall. Following this the Rebekahs, Oddfellows and Legion held the Decoration Ceremony at the cemetery. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JULY 3, 1996 On Wednesday, June 19, John Westland from the Substance Abuse Centre at the Sick Children's Hospital in Toronto conducted seminars with Grades 6 to 8 as part of the school's substance abuse education program. Students asked many interesting and thoughtful questions. We all hope Mr. Westland's visit will help students deal with these issues as they mature. Last Friday Mrs. Tedesco's two kindergarten classes went to the conservation area for a picnic with their parents. After several activity songs and games everyone enjoyed the lunch. Special thanks to Mrs. Kerkhof, who provided a specially decorated cake with all the children's names written on the icing. The children explored the creek and the dam on the way back to school. We want to thank Mrs. Cousins, Mrs. Tedesco and Mrs. Beutten- miller for all they have done for students in our school during their Brussels grads get awards A number of Brussels Grade 8 graduates were honoured for achievement tt the ceremony and banquet June 24. Justin Ruttan and Stephanie Patch were the top winners, receiv- ing multiple awards in addition to being the recipients of the Royal Canadian Legion Proficiency Award and Huron County pins for Academic Excellence. Other awards were presented to: Brussels Lions Citizenship, Patricia Wilbee and Mark Kroll; Glenn Smith ABCD Award, Justin Rut- tan; Grade 7 Good Guy Award, Patricia Wilbee; School Advisory Council Award, Justin Ruttan; French, Justin Ruttan; Cory -Bragg Athletic Award, Nathan Garland; Hazel Matheson History Award, Nathan Garland; Brussels Opti- mists Science Award, Stephanie Patch; Kerry John Frances Moogk Art Award, Cassie Bootzin; Margery A. Nathan Garland was valedictori- an. time in Brussels. Mrs. Tedesco will be teaching kindergarten at Turnbcrry in September. Mrs. Beuttenmiller will be settling into her new home in Scaforth, and Mrs. Cousins is trading in her chalk for the pleasures of retirement. We wish each of these wonderful people much happiness in the future. On Monday teachers held an awards assembly to recognize students who made special contributions to the school in areas such as volunteering, courtesy, effort, achievement and primary printing. Several sports bars were also distributed as well as those for public speaking. Congratulations to all recipients. Best wishes, also to our Grade 8 students as they go on to secondary school. Congratulations to Justin Ruttan and Stephanie Patch, who received the awards for highest academic achievement at the graduation. Thanks to the many parents who helped with preparations and supervision to make the evening a success. Thanks, as well, to Mrs. Perrie, Mrs. Prior and other staff for assisting. During the last week all classes went swimming at the pool. Thank you to the pool staff for their help. Friends and relatives came to extend their best wishes at an open house on Saturday afternoon at Melville Presbyterian Church, Brussels, the site of their wedding 50 years earlier. Congratulatory wishes came from the prime minis- ter, Governor General Romeo Leblanc and Huron Bruce MP Paul S teckle. The former Margaret Smith and her groom were married June 29, 1946. Rev. George Milne officiat- ed. Attendants were Margery Ritchie, Marg's sister, and Cliff Sweeney, Sam's brother. Ushering guests were Ross Taylor and Ivan Wightman. Sam's niece, Yvonne Patmore was flowergirl, while Mar- garet Cardiff was soloist. The couple took a honeymoon trip to Orangeville then on to the Ottawa-area to visit Sam's sister, before going on to Montreal. After returning to their home at RR1, Ethel, where Sam farmed, Margaret worked for 36 years as a schoolteacher. They retired in the early 70s. Special interests over the years have been travelling, flying in Sam's homemade Cessna 172 and their involvement with the church.
