Grey Township - 140 Years
Cran, brook's roots date back to 1853
The first settlers to Cranbrook
came via Seaforth, Walton and the
Beauchamp Creek and established
a post village in 1853 receiving
mail semi-weekly.
In 1855, Cranbrook was surveyed
into lots from Lot 11, Conc. 11,
Grey Twp. to Lot 15, on the 11th
Conc., inclusive. This survey was
called the Town Plot for Grey Twp.
and was known as the Town Plot or
the Plot for at least X50 years.
Because the railway did not come
through, as had been expected,
Cranbrook never developed into a
large town as was planned.
A log store and a frame granary
were erected by John Leckie. In the
early days settlers would take their
grain to the store to exchange for
merchandise. This grain was hauled
by teams of oxen and in later years
butter and eggs were also traded.
The first hotel was built in 1854.
The hall was in the hotel, and all
council meetings and political
meetings were held there. The first
Post Office in Grey Twp. was in
Cranbrook in 1854. The mail in
1996 is delivered from Brussels.
There were 2 lime kilns. Many
tons of lime were delivered from
here into McKillop Twp. for
building stone foundations. A flax
mill on the river bank, employed 25
or 30 men and boys.
In 1865 a Presbyterian Church
was built on its present site. In
1888 an addition was added and in
1940 a basement was put under the
church and the structure was
remodelled. The manse has been
sold and church services are still
held in the church in 1996. The
cemetery behind the church still
has its own board although it has
been turned over to Grey Twp.
There was a Lutheran Church
and Methodist Church in
Cranbrook at one time, also two
blacksmith shops, a sawmill and a
cheese factory later known as
Cameron's cider and apple butter
factory. -

The south side of the Plot, Lot
15, Conc. 12, was known as
Tannersville.
A hotel was erected. a hall with a
store under it and a sawmill south
of the hotel. There was a pump
business, a blacksmith shop, a
wagon shop, a cider mill and
chopping mill. Large fires in 1889
and 1895 are recorded in the
Cranbrook Tweedsmuir History
books.
The school was built a mile and a
quarter east of Cranbrook, where
the Presbyterian Church held their
services prior to building their
church. A school was built in 1867
in the village and replaced in 1895.
In 1996 it is a home.
In 1895 a store and house were
built on the corner. Later an egg-
grading station and cold storage
were added. This building is used
in 1996 as a dwelling and extra
apartment.
The present Community Centre
was built in 1950. The Cranbrook
Women's Institute was formed in
1950 and disbanded in 1991.
In 1947 the first library was
established in the Presbyterian
manse with about 100 books
bought from the Gorrie Library and
arrangements made with the Huron
County Mobile Library to get 100
books for $25.00 registration fee.
Over the years other books have
been donated. In 1948 the library
moved to Michel's store. The
library moved to Saxon's home
from the store area, and in 1996 the
books are in the Cranbrook
Community Centre.
In 1996 Cranbrook has an auto
body shop, an owner of a
packaging operation, four
contractors, an electrician, and an
appliance servicer.
