Grey Township — 140 Years Moncrieff settlers went to Cranbrook to do the shopping Moncrieff is located on Lots 30 and 31, Conc. 16, Grey Twp. The name Moncrieff was derived from a place in Scotland. The CPR was built about 1906 and ran about two miles to the south. McNaught station was a thriving shipping station for livestock. The first settlers who came to this area in 1860 were Hartwell and Luke Speiran and the McNaughts. Some of the people were known to have carried two pails of butter to Mitchell and Seaforth and returned carrying a cwt. of flour. The women knit socks and exchanged them in Mitchell for food and clothing. For some, Cranbrook was their nearest place to shop via a trail through the bush. There were many sawmills erected, namely Stowe Mill, Star Mill and the Querengesser Mill. The first store which. contained a post office was built in 1897 by Mrs. Lucas. This store was destroyed by fire and a new one built by Richard Pratt, who sold it to F. A. Harrison in 1929. In 1947 a library was located in the store until 1966 when the new county library system came into effect. The business was closed down in 1975. The upstairs of the store at one time was used as a dance hall. In 1910 the telephone was installed. The first cars in the community were owned by W. Machan, James McKay and Wm. Schnoch about 1914. The opening of the first Methodist Church, named Bethel, took place in 1893 with Charles Querengesser, owner of a sawmill donating most of the lumber. Rev. Watt, minister supervised the carpentry work. This churCh was sold to the Presbyterians in 1902. Services were held at Bethel one week and Cranbrook the next until 1910 when Bethel became called "Knox" Presbyterian and Rev. Lundy was minister for Walton and Moncrieff. A new church was officially opened in February 1912. In 1925, with the event of church union, this congregation became the United Church. In 1976 the church was closed. It is now the residence of Jim and Cindy Moyer and is designated as an architecturally significant building. In the spring of 1872 the first log school was completed, with the first teacher being Mr. Graham. A new white brick school was built in 1893. There were 60 pupils and the teacher's salary was about $275 yearly. In 1924 a third school on the same site was built. In 1947 school bus service was provided to transport pupils to a secondary school, the majority going to Listowel. The school served the community until the end of June 1965 when Grey Central School opened. In October, 1965 the school was bought by the community for a community hall. The first community hall was built about 1926. This hall served the community until it was sold and torn down in 1965. The Women's Institute which was formed in 1951 at the home of Mrs. Alex Speiran held their meetings at the hall and did much to keep the hall decorated and clean until they disbanded in June 1991. A blacksmith shop, situated between the store and the church, was built in 1905 by Robert Munn. The Moncrieff chopping mill was built in 1915. Mr.. F. A. Harrison who purchased the mill in 1918 installed the first one cylinder diesel engine of its kind in Canada. The mill was closed in 1980.
