Memories of Grey
The Feb. 16, 1949 issue of The
Brussels Post featured an account
of an Ethel women, who, at the age
of 96, recalled the pioneer days of
Grey Twp.
Mrs. Sarah Jane Henry's memory
is one of the few remaining
storehouses of first-hand know-
ledge of pioneer days in Grey Twp.
Her father came to the Ethel
neighbourhood as a pioneer when
she was 18 months old. Her father
and two older brothers went ahead
to build a shanty, while her mother
waited in Milverton with the
younger children. Mrs. Henry
remembered the quilt that was hung
across the shanty door in an effort
to keep out the mosquitoes.
"We've stood at the back door
lots of times and seen as many .as
five wolves go by," Mrs. Henry
said. "I can remember one day I
was on the road with my mother
when we saw a bear walking along
a log. My mother told me to stand
still and keep quiet; then she
slapped her hands together and the
bear looked at us and then just
walked away into the bush."
Mrs. Henry is the daughter of
William Sharp, who cleared the
land on Lots 25 and 26 in Conc. 8
of Grey. She remembers her father
saying that he bought 100 acres for
$100 at the land auction, and got an
extra 100 acres as a premium on
the purchase. She was married at
the age of 21 to I. M. Henry, who
died in 1941.
Mrs. Henry can remember the
days when her father, who had
been a weaver in Scotland, would
take the wool from his own sheep
and carry it to Brussels to.be
carded. When he brought it home
again he would weave it to make
cloth for his own family and for the
neighbours. "I always wound for
him," Mrs. Henry remembers.
