For more than a dozen years, the community of 1,000 has hosted the Bluewater Kennel Club's All Breeds Dog Show and Obedience Trials, drawing competitors from across Canada and the United States. With contacts going out early this year, Florence Pullen of Clinton, the show chair, hopes the entrant numbers will be even higher than in the last few years. "We have already received a lot of interest from the United States and with three American judges this year, we hope to draw more than last year." Pullen hopes that the familiarity of the judges' names from United States dog show circuits will draw in more competitors from south of the border. "Judging can become a political issue as local breeders become known to the judges. It is often better to bring judges from greater distances." Acquiring accredited judges is one of the main tasks of preparing for the show, says Pullen. "They must be booked several years in advance to get the good ones." The Blyth dog show has already hooked judges through 1999, with an American husband and wife team who are accredited to judge just about every class, coming in the next few years, says Pullen. The number of judges required for a show varies, due to their qualifications. There must be at least one judge accredited to judge four of the seven classifications to enable the selection of Best of Show for each day. Other judges must be accredited for two or three groups, with local permit judges filling out the ranks. Permit judges handle assignments, under supervision to 'gain the qualifications necessary to become accredited, says Pullen. The three-day show which runs from July 2 to 4, is not just for the competitors. It attracts large crowds of dog lovers and aspiring show people. As the dogs are groomed, washed, backcombed and poufed, they patiently await their turn in the ring, ever the professionals, knowing there will be a reward in the end. For attendees, meals are available on the grounds or there is a large selection of eating establishments within the village. Admission to the park, which is open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., is just $2 for adults, $1 for children and free for youngsters accompanied by an adult. All gate proceeds go the Huronia Humane Society. Any profits realized from the entrants fees will be divided amongst the humane society, Canine Vision and the Pet Trust at the Ontario Vision and the Pet Trust at the Ontario Veterinarian College. Whether it is an affection for Shihtsu and Chihuahuas or German Shepherds and Collies, Blyth is the place to be during the first week of July.
