The Citizen, 1996-06-19, Page 26By John Schedler
Two of the movies' finest actors headline Heat ***1/2 (Warner) an
excellent crime thriller from writer and director Michael Mann. A driven
cop played by Al Pacino squares off against Robert DeNiro, a master
criminal, in this surprisingly literate action film whose three-hour running
time just breezes by. In addition to the great leads the supporting cast
includes Val Kilmer. John Voight and another strong performance from
Ashley Judd, who was outstanding in Ruby in Paradise and Smoke. (Rated
18A - for rough language and violence)
One of last year's surprise hits was II Postino ***1/2 (Alliance) a
delightful romantic film from Italy. The story follows a shy postman
(Massimo Troisi) who asks. an exiled Chilean poet (Philippe Noiret) to
help him with the heart of the town's most beautiful young woman. A
bittersweet and delightful movie in all respects. Highly recommended.
(Rated PG)
Being a longtime Woody Allen fan I was really looking forward to
seeing Mighty Aphrodite **** (Alliance), his latest comedy. I certainly
wasn't disappointed by this funny film about a couple who adopts a baby,
and the husband, years later searching for the biological mother, who turns
out to be a prostitute and porno actress. Mita Sorvino's performance as the
ditzy hooker won her a well deserved Best Supporting Actress Oscar.
(Rated 14A - with some rough language)
Among other current new releases Father of the Bride II (Touchstone),
starring Steve Martin as a guy trying to recapture his youth when both his
daughter and then his wife announce they are pregnant. Most of the
original cast members including Diane Keaton, Martin Short and
Kimberly Williams return for this sequal. (Rated PG)
Sandra Bullock and Dennis Leary go for laughs in Two If By Sea
(Warner) a romantic comedy about a two-bit con artist and his girlfriend
trying to unload a stolen painting on a swank Cape Cod island. (Rated PG)
Jean Claude Van Damme is back in Sudden Death. (MCA/Universal) as
a fireman whose daughter is kidnapped at the Stanley Cup playoffs by a
group of terrorists, who threaten to blow up the arena if their demands
aren't met. (Rated R)
Former football star Brian Bosworth takes on the bad guys in One Man's
Justice (Live) as a man out to avenge the murder of his wife and daughter.
(Rated R)
And then there is Bio-Dome (Warner) starring Pauly Shore and Stephen
Baldwin as two dim bulbs, who are accidentally sealed in a bio-sphere
with a group of scientists. I found the opening credits so irritating I passed
on the rest of the movie. (Rated PG - if anyone cares)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY
RYAN CHAMNEY
JUNE 19
By Eileen Exel and
Patricia Wilbee
As everyone has probably heard
Brussels Public School will soon be
sending out our school cook book.
We're sorry about the little mix up
in last week's article which stated
that the cook book is only $8. The
real price is $10 per book and it's
well worth it.
On Tuesday, June 11 Jenny
Wareham from the Zurich
Unemployment Office came to visit
the Grade 7/8 class. She talked
about what you need to do to find a
job and where to go to find help.
We're sure that what Jenny said
will come in handy when we're
looking for summer jobs.
Mrs. Graber and Mrs. Richmond
were at BPS on Friday, June 14 for
their annual First Aid presentation.
They talked to Grades 3, 5 and 7
about how to have a safe and
enjoyable summer.
This past week the Grades 2/3,
6/7 and 7/8 classes have been busy
with educational trips. On Wednes-
day, June 12 the Grade 2/3 class
went to East Wawanosh Nature
Centre. They caught many different
creatures. We interviewed students
who went on the trip. Tara Martin
said, "I caught water striders, frogs,
crayfish and frog eggs. I'also fell hi
the river, but I still had fun."
Cory Chapman said "I Caught
crayfish, waterstriders, and frog
eggs. I liked the instructor Esther. I
had lots of fun."
We hear Mrs. Clark fell in the
mud too.
Mrs. Beuttenmiller's class went
to the Brickman Botanical Gardens
and an art gallery in Stratford on
Thursday, June 13. Katie Clark
reported that there were many
different sections in the gardens
which included the main section,
Biblical section, white section and
herb section. There were a lot of
ponds with bullfrogs and goldfish.
They also had cute little animals.
Tim Harrison liked the Art
Gallery. There were four rooms
which contained Shakespearean
costumes from the Stratford
Festival, paintings, and sculptures
from seven different artists.
Mrs. Perrie's Grade 7/8 students
were early birds on Thursday, June
13 when they had to be to school
by 6:25 a.m. for our trip. Our first
stop was at the Esso Plant in Sarnia
where we saw bottles being made
and filled. It was really interesting
and our tour guides were great.
We then left for Uncle Tom's
Cabin in Dresden where we had a
picnic lunch and got a tour of the
Cabin and the Museum. We also
went on a scavenger hunt to find
our way to freedom by searching
for a silver coin.
Next we had to make a
presentation of what we learned.
Then we left for Petrolia Discovery
where we saw a video on the
history of oil and we also saw
working oil wells. Patricia Wilbee
and Stephanie Patch were the first
visitors to ever chew on a piece of
gum bed which is dry oil on top of
the earth's surface.
We then took off for Farley's Fun
House where we all had a laugh
when the little kids reported to the
staff that the big kids had smelly
feet. We all had fun going through
1 the maze, playing in the plastic
balls, and going down the twirly
slides. Everyone had a chance to
get bashed around on the bumper
cars. Most of us liked the video
arcade because they had up-to-date
games and we had fun racing each
other on the summer race car game.
The hamburgers and fries were
great. All in all everyone had a
good time.
Healthy pastime
Brussels Public School students Courtney Sallows, left,
and Nicole Mastnak show off winning form as they display
the skills utilized for the recent Jump Rope of Heart
campaign. The school raised $2,166.20 for the Heart and
Stroke foundation. Senior students are also teaching
younger schoolmates the skill of jumping while others
reinforce the lifesaving techniques for fire safety.
