For Teens, By Teens OFF THE WALL Movie review Mission accomplished — reviewer says, film a hit Teen page new 'Citizen' feature By Erin Roulston Welcome readers! This is the first edition of The Norm Huron Citizen's teen page. It's a page designated just for the teens of our area as well as designed by teens. We will feature interviews with teens, stories and pictures from our readers, coming events, movie reviews, Letters to the Editor and anything you ask for. You'll be able to find the page only within The Citizen every other week. First on our agenda is to find a name for our page. If you have a good idea send it in, and if we use your name you win a prize (we haven't decided what yet; we're looking for something really good). We need a name that applies to teens, but nothing cheesy. Secondly, the volunteer staff on our teen page is still rather small, so if you're between 13 and 19 and are interested in journalism, photography, or just need something to do, we'd love for you to join us. And of course since this page is just for you, we need your input to know what you want to read. If you have story ideas, someone you know who should be featured on our page, or if you have pictures or a piece of writing you'd like us to print, mail it to (Blyth and Brussels office, Box 152, Brussels or Box 429, Blyth) or drop it off during office hours in Blyth or Brussels. I hope you enjoy this new feature and that you visit us again next time. By Ashley Gropp Will it be brain drain or social pain? It's exam week. How do you juggle time with friends and still try to make the grade? Picture this: two classmates, one out partying, the other in his room, spending every waking hour preparing for his English exam. Maybe the first student is having more fun, but who will have the last laugh? This is not to say that you shouldn't do anything but study, but having too much fun can lead to failure or mean cramming the day before. Since people learn different ways, studying several hours a day, seven days a week isn't necessarily your best bet. It can give you headaches, make you tired or restless, or even make you forget everything. Cracking under the pressure of making honour roll, or even passing, can be avoided by studying the right way. Have you been told to study alone, in an area with no distractions, and no music? Do you find you have trouble concentrating like this? You could try turning on the stereo or studying With friends in that course. If you find it impossible to study for long, take a 23 Victoria St., Clinton Upper Floor (519) 482-1445 By Mark Nonkes If you're like me you've probably never even heard of the TV show Mission Impossible. That's until now, over three decades since the original series aired. Expectations are being set high for this movie. Paramount is expecting it to go into the highest money making movies in all of history. What is all the hype really about? Mission Impossible would all PROFILE By Crystal Hulley Imagine having the chance to go to Atlanta this summer for the Olympic Games. Well, not only is Steve McCowan doing just that, but he is also among the 22 physically challenged athletes who will be representing Canada at the Paralympic Games which run parallel to the Olympics. Steve, who graduated from Central Huron Secondary School this year, is renowned for his accomplishments in track and field. Recently, at the Canadian games for the physically challenged, he won gold in the running long lump and 4X100 relay, and silver in the 100 metre race. Such accomplish- ments as these are what won him a place on the Canadian Paralympic Team. To prepare for the games, Steve, who has cerebral palsy, will be joining the other team members in Oklahoma from July 12 - 21, where they will have a chance to train in a first class facility with a similar climate to Atlanta. Steve, who will be heading to Cambrien College in Sudbury in September, hopes to continue with his training there. His goals are to compete in the 1997 and 1998 World Championships and the 2000 Paralympics in Sidney, Australia. When I asked Steve what advice he had for his peers, all he said was, "Set attainable goals, work hard and have fun" — can't beat that! From all of us, good luck Steve and we hope to hear about all your gold medals from Atlanta. around have to be the best movie I've ever seen. It will have your jaws drop with surprise, and that's a guarantee. You'll probably only use the edge of your seat for most of the movie because of the sheer suspense and the loads of action. The thing I liked best was that,it ignored traditional stereotypes of men and women; the characters played equally risky parts. Tom Cruise and the entire cast of Mission Impossible give some of the best performances ever. The writers did such a good job adding plot twists and countless surprises that at times you may become confused. This movie will definitely leave you exiting the theatre asking questions, but these small flaws are hardly worth mentioning because the movie is so good. This is one film you do not want to miss, so go and spend the money and see it. You won't regret it. THIS WEEK'S TOP 10 short break when you feel you're losing concentration. Go out with friends every once in awhile; you don't have to kill your social life. Many who like to leave everything to the last minute will find themselves trying to cram an entire semester's work into a 24- hour study study period. Although this works in a few cases, most will not remember much more than they could the day before. Below is a random survey of some students at F. E. Madill S. S., Grades 9 to OAC, on how they cope with the stress of exams. Although some ideas aren't recommended, others may help you cope. TOP 10 How do you cope with the stress of exams: 10. Study through the night every day of the week. 9. Freak out. 8. Party. 7. Workout (exercise to keep mind off exams). 6. Go Relax (eg. on the beach). 5. Take frequent breaks. 4. Hang out with friends. 3. Listen to music. 2. Study with friends. 1. Forget about exams, then cram the day before.
