THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 19, 1996 PAGE 21. Living legacy marks principal's retirement By Janice Becker Educators may be unwilling to boast of their accomplishments after 35 years in the field, but go to those who know, the children. This was definitely the case after speaking with Ron Jewitt regarding his impending retirement as princi- pal of Hullett Central Public School. In a modest, rather reluctant way, he listed his assignments, said he Continued from page 20 doing work for the school fair coming up in September. STUDENT PARLIAMENT ELECTION By Kristy Blair On May 24 Blyth Public School held an election for the running of the Students' Council. Students from Grades 3/4 and up voted on the positions for vice president, secretary and treasurer. The Students' Council's job is to decide on fun events for our school, such as: "Wacky Hair Day", Carnivals Ind special dances. The results of the election are hat Kristy Blair will be president, ramie Lewis will be vice president, Derek Cook will be the treasurer and Shanda Loder will be the ecretary. They will be taking the iositions of the former Students' ;ouncil, who might I add, did an xcellent job this year. Ashley Towson (former president), Nathan hannon (treasurer), Chauncey !arter-Brown (secretary), and .risty Blair (vice. president), orked hard and made our school ar fun. I'm sure this year's Students' ouncil will do a good job as well. ongratulations to the winners! • LITERACY FESTIVAL By Shanda Loder Recently the Grades 4/5 class 3nt to the Literacy Festival in inton. really had no future plans and the memories were too many to recount. However, his most recent charges at Hullett Central Public School, had a lot more to says as they gath- ered for an afternoon of memories and goodbyes, June 14. Each class performed a skit, a song or presentation for Jewitt as he sat rather shyly in a large easy- chair surrounded by colourful bal- loons. "It was okay," said Kirk Stewart (one of the students of the 4/5 class). Kirk enjoyed the string games and the song writing best of all, while Candice Bearss enjoyed "Reach for the Top" a quiz game combination about music, math and television. The 4/5 class has just finished an Olympic unit and are now starting into the medieval times. The 4/5 class has also recently returned from Casaloma (Toronto), an area filled with castles and knights. I do believe they enjoyed that also. Overall I think the 4/5 class is very lucky to have been able to participate in these events. Too bad I'm not in grade 4/5 anymore! J.K. AND S.K. KINDERGARTEN By Jolene Coburn and Dianne Mason Benjamin Walsh, Benjamin Caldwell, Dean Linner and Brett Courtney have all been M.M. lately. The kindergartens really enjoy playing in the sand building sandcastles, and they all like building things with the blocks. They also like playing with trucks, and Lego. They were learning songs, poems and stories. Their favourite stories are: "The Little Red Hen," "The Gingerbread Man," and "There was an Old Lady who swallowed a fly." They also had Playday on May 30. They had lots of fun! In an entertaining rendition of a popular song, the Grade 7/8 class performed Jewitt's Paradise, in rap. It was through this song and a poem detailing Jewitt's day at school, that his personality began to show through. No, he doesn't like fights, and yes, he does like donuts and other tasty treats. The staff may miss the daily delivery of breakfast goodies when Jewitt arrived at the school at 8 a.m. but they are not likely to for- get the frequent searches for his coffee cup. For the students, the memories which will linger will be the 8:45 a.m. greeting as they disembarked the school buses, sharing a book in his office, his gentle, calm manner and the 3:30 p.m. farewell as they boarded the buses for home. For years to come, Jewitt will be remembered at Hullett Central 'for his dedication to tree planting at the school. In appreciation of his efforts, one last tree was planted on the grounds at the end of the cele- bration, to commemorate his retire- ment. Thanking the students, staff, community and parents for their support, Jewitt said the pleasure of teaching was all his. He was the one who had all the fun. "What makes teaching pleasant is what happens every day. From the smiling faces, to the happy hellos and getting outside at recess." In his final words at the assem- bly, Je*itt read a portion of the poem All I Needed to Know, I Learned in Kindergarten, remind- ing the students that everything they do is important, Including enjoying that glass of milk with cookies and reading a book.
