Grey Central Echo
Students contribute to township celebration
As the year comes to an end the
students at Grey Central are
working hard to complete all the
end of the year tasks. Besides
finishing the usual school work and
projects for the Brussels Fall Fair,
they are also working on activities
for the Grey Township 140th
Birthday Celebrations.
Grade 8 students have spent
many hours preparing material for
the school yearbook. Several
classes are planning class trips
which are integral parts of units
that they have been studying in
school.
There are many upcoming events
in the next two. weeks. A two-pitch
tournament will be held on
Thursday, June 20.
An awards assembly will be held
for the junior and senior classes at
10:40 on that day as well.
Grade 8s will be attending a
graduation banquet on Monday,
June 24. Former principal, Mr.
Wayne Tessier, will be the guest
speaker.
GRADE 1 AND 2 NEWS
Grades 1 and 2 at Grey Central
School are looking forward to the
celebration of learning that is
scheduled to take place on Tues-
day, June 25 at 9:40 a.m. in the
auditorium. The students will share
with parents, grandparents, and
friends, the things they remember
most about their year of learning.
Parents and grandparents are
invited to attend this celebration
which should take approximately
40 minutes.
The Grades 1 and 2 classes
recently attended the Huron County
Literacy Festival in Clinton, along
with other classes in the primary
division. This was a perfect way to
round out the year's focus on
literature which began with•the
Let's Do Munsch experience in the
fall. Throughout the year the
students have worked hard to
improve their skills in many areas
and the focus on children's
literature was enhanced by both of
these experiences. Miss Doig and
Mrs. Richmond wish all the Grade
1 and 2 students a safe and happy
summer.

met twice a week all year,
culminating with the Jump Rope
for Heart event which was held
May 14.
The team consisted of 10 very
faithful girls from Grades 5 to 8:
Amanda Stratton, Missy McLellan,
Rachel Newman, Jenny Young,
Christina Befurt, Christa Cochrane,
Jenny Wildman, Michelle DeWit,
Jelma Gorter and Jaclyn Stafford.
Our first demonstration was at
Huronlea at Christmas. In February
and April we participated in events
at our own school. Also in
February, we were invited to take
part in Heartburn Day in Stratford.
This spring we did demonstrations
at Clinton, Turnberry, Wallace and
Stratford.
I hope it was a good experience
for the girls. I know it was a good
experience for me. A very big
"Thank you" to the girls for all
their hard work.
GRADE EIGHT GOES TO
TORONTO
By Amanda Stratton
On Tuesday, June 11, the entire
Grade 8 class left at 9 a.m. for
Toronto for our two-day trip. Once
we arrived in Toronto, the first
place we visited was the Parliament
Buildings. We walked around and
saw many interesting things
throughout the building including
displays about Ontario's agriculture
and history.
After lunch we went to the Royal
Ontario Museum. We learned about
Natural and Human history and
about a variety of animals. We
viewed their dinosaur exhibits and
were told. that humans have lived
on the Earth for only a small
fraction of the time that dinosaurs
did. There was also an interesting
exhibit of a boy who died 3,200
years ago and was found by
archaeologists. We got to
experience what it is like to be in a
bat cave by walking through their
very realistic simulation of one.
Our next stop was Old For York,
an army base that became a
museum in the 1930s. We saw the
.barracks where soldiers would have
roomed and compared them to the
much more private and spacious
living quarters of an officer. We
also had the chance to hear some
music played throughout the day at
the base. They used instruments
like the drums, fife, and bugle. One
volunteer got to try playing some
songs on the drums, too. We also
got to see where food was cooked
and were able to try one of the
things they ate, Queen's Cake. We
also learned how to load and fire a
musket.
Following our tour of Old Fork
York, we headed to Toronto
Harbour for an outing on a
schooner. The first thing we did
was separate into three groups.
Then we helped raise the sails. We
also learned about navigation,
handling emergencies, how the
boat was made, possible problems,
and the proper terms for several
things on the boat. After that we
got to help steer the boat back to
the harbour and lower the sails.
After learning to sail, we visited
the CN Tower. We took the
elevator up to the Eco-Deck and
glass floor levels. Some people also
went to the very top of the tower.
The CN Tower was our last stop
before going to the high school
where we would spend the night.
We played a game of basketball
before we went to bed.
In the morning, the first place we
went was to the Science Centre.
We once again split up into groups
and we walked around the different
sections of the Science Centre
learning about an abundance of
interesting things. Our next stop
was the SkyDome, to watch the
Toronto Blue Jays play against the
New York Yankees. We saw home
runs and magnificent catches
throughout the game and were
delighted when the Blue Jays won.
After the game we headed back
to Grey, tired from our two days of
fun. We all enjoyed the trip and
wished that we could have stayed
longer but we had to return home.
Our trip was a lot of fun and I
would recommend seeing the sights
in Toronto to anyone.
