THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 12, 1996 PAGE 21.
Appreciative winners
Cindy McKee's Grade 4/5 class at Blyth Public School were thrilled to be the winners of the
Morris Twp. 140th anniversary celebration logo contest because they won pizza and pop for
lunch. Morris Councillor Kevin Pletch delivered the treat June 3 to a very hungry class. The
pizza was demolished in less than 10 minutes, but their slogan, 'Morris Kicks in '96' will
remain much longer.
Grey Central Echo
Parent assists at school
Mrs. Constanze, Ruttan, a parent
at Grey Central has been assisting
full time at the school for the past
two weeks. Mrs. Ruttan„ one of
Grey's regular volunteers is
presently enrolled in a course
which will qualify her to work with
children and youth, and time spent
at the school enables her to practise
the information she has been
studying.
Mrs. Ruttan has been involved in
a variety of activities at the school,
which ranged from reading with
individual children, cataloguing
and bar coding library materials,
and organizing a reading program
for young children with the
assistance of Mrs. Louise Sygrove
the Huron County Board of
Education Reading Consultant.
Grey Central staff and students
thank you, Mrs. Ruttan for
choosing our school for your work
practicum. We appreciate your time
and talents.
READING SUPPORT
PROGRAM
The reading support program is
an individual program which gives
a boost to Early Readers. This
program uses the various strategies
of learning to read: phonics,
context clues, journal writing and
book knowledge.
Participants who completed the
program received certificates of
achievement, and a book. Classroom
teachers, parents, and Resource
teachers have found this program to
be beneficial in assisting Early
Readers. The children became
confident, successful readers thanks
to the assistance of the dedicated
volunteers.
In the fall, this STAR, (Special
Time Around Reading), program
will be continued. Volunteers are
always needed.
MRS. STARKEY'S
GRADE 3-4
On a Nature Walk with our
kindergarten buddies, we
discovered hundreds of frogs' eggs
in our three ponds. Since then, they
have hatched into tadpoles and we
are awaiting their next
developments.
Another interesting study we did
was called "Circle of Life". We
took hula hoops and placed them in
three different areas - our yard, the

Mr. Livermore's class travelled to
the Family Literacy Festival at the
Clinton Fairgrounds on June 4.
Accompanying them was Grade
5/6.
The students were broken down
into small groups and had a chance
to see many talented authors and
musicians. Some of the famous
authors were Judy Ann Sadler,
Robin Muller, Camilla Gryski, Ted
Stauton, Paul Morin. The authors
put on exciting presentations for
the eager learning students.
The groups were presented with
two presentations. In between the
two presentations the Beirdo
Brothers, entertained the huge
group of students. The students
enjoyed meeting other students
from other schools.
The Grade 4 class is also eager to
go to their end of the year trip to
the Goderich Pioneer Museum and
the Gaol- On June 17.
MR. JEWITT RETIREMENT
On June 14, there Witt be a
special afternoon for Mr. Jewitt's
retirement. Each class will be
putting on a presentation for Mr.
Jewitt. There will be afternoon tea
from 1 to 4 p.m. on June 23. The
school would like to thank Mr.
Jewitt for his 11 years at Hullett,
and we all wish him a wonderful
retirement.
TRACK & FIELD
On May 30 the area track and
field competition was held in
Seaforth. The overall winners from
Hullett were Kristy James, 1st
senior girl; Melissa Snell, 3rd
intermediate girl; Kelly Van Baaren
and Meaghan Cook, 3rd midget
girls.
Overall the day went really well.
3 PITCH TOURNAMENT
On Tuesday, June 18 the 3-pitch
tournament is being held in
Clinton. Half of the graduating
class has been chosen to partici-
pate. These students have been
chosen for good sportsmanship, co-
operation, and fairly good baseball
skills. This year it will be a non-
competitive and co-ed, fun day.
The 18 people from Hullett will be
mixed with the students .from the
other schools and divided into
teams. It sounds like a fun day.
GRADE 2/3
Mrs. Bosman's Grade 2/3 class
has been studying the world of
"snakes" in environmental studies.
In Language Activities they're
finding that snakes are more
interesting and not as scary as they
thought.
They attended the Literacy
Festival on Thursday, June 6 and
really enjoyed the authors, illustra-
tors, story tellers and crafts people.
They are getting excited about
taking a walk to Mrs. Bosman's to
spend the day doing a tree and
stream study with some games and
lunch mixed in.
