Brussels Livestock report Veal prices still strong, reaching $116 high The market at Brussels Livestock for the week ending June 7 was: fed cattle, 940; cows, 286; veal calves, 218; lambs, 143; stockers, 1,586; and pigs, light run. Top quality fed steers and heifers were selling $1 higher with other classes selling steady. Cows also sold steady. Veal sold $5 higher and lambs sold steady. Stockers on Friday traded on a fully steady market. There were 590 steers on offer selling from $79 to $84 to the high of $96. One gold steer consigned by Johnston Farms, Bluevale, weighing 1,355 lbs. sold for $96 to Norwich Packers while their total offering of 106 steers averaging 1,335 lbs. sold for an overall price of $80.76. Thirty-four steers consigned by Cunningham Farms, Lucan, averaging 1,334 lbs. sold for an average of $85.41 with sales to $95.75. Thirteen steers consigned by Schmidtbrook Farms, Woodstock, averaging 1,418 lbs. sold for an average of $83.75 with sales to $93.50. Six steers consigned by KenRuth Farms Ltd., Lucknow, averaging 1,093 lbs. sold for an average-of $85.36 with sales to $92. Twenty-one steers consigned by Kada Farms, Bluevale, averaging 1,286 lbs. sold for an average of $81.66 with sales to $87.50. Thirty-eight steers Royal hosts speaking competition All young people in Canada between the ages of 16 and 24 are invited to participate in a Public Speaking Competition at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto. The winner will receive a cash prize of $700 from Farm Credit Corporation (FCC), and the opportunity to spend a day explor- ing areas of interest at the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA). Five runners-up will also win cash prizes. The winner will also have their name engraved on the Leonard Wilhelm Memorial Trophy, which will remain on display at the Royal Winter Fair. The competition is co-sponsored by Farm Credit Corporation and the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and will take place at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair on Saturday, Nov. 9. Contestants are required to give a timed, five-to-seven minute speech in either of Canada's official languages on one of four suggested topics: • The Value of Volunteers • Heros/Heroines of Canadian Agriculture • The Changing Face of the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair • The Importance of Research/ Technology in Agriculture Official rules and entry forms are available at any office of the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, and all FCC field and district offices in Ontario. Eight heifers consigned by Irvin Schenk, Petersburg, averaging 1,124 lbs. sold for an average of $80.88 with sales to $87.25., The Huron County 4-H Leaders' Association has again organized a battery recycling blitz for the months of June and July. This is a chance to clean up the local environment, make it a safer place for family to work and play, as well contribute to the Huron 4-H program. The batteries will be collected at eight sites and sold to a recycling company in Mississauga. They recycle up to 98 per cent of the used lead-acid batteries you donate. The proceeds will be used to help fund 4-H events and programs in Huron County.
