Blyth Tykes capture third win On a winning streak, the Blyth Tykes Houseleague squad defeated Auburn 24-11, in the June 5 matchup. Erin Moore made two fantastic outs at first base while Brittney Cook was strong on defense at short stop, knocking down a line drive in the third. Josh Albrechtas had a homerun in the first and followed up with a grand slam in the third. Katelyn Toll added to the total with a good single in the fourth. The entire team played a good game, earning their second victory of the season. Brussels Acre T and Brussels B Bantam soccer teams lost their June 6 encounters. Palmerston dropped Acre T 5-0 and Newton beat Brussels B 10-2. Acre 'f keeper Cory Campbell, had an outstanding night. Palmerston was held to a 2-0 lead until the last five minutes of the game when they scored three quick goals. Brussels B team keeper Josh Beuermann had a busy first half. Newton went ahead on a low sliding ground ball. Newton made it 2-0 when they slipped a ball around Beuermann, who blunted the aggressive Newton attack with many great saves. Brussels' Terry Brown carried the ball through the Newton defense and drew out the keeper to score. In the next Brussels' attack Newton drew a penalty and Terry Brown took the penalty kick. He High scoring games seem to be the norm when Belgrave PeeWee boys take on a challenger. Meeting up with Wingham, June 4, the teams battled to a 12-11 final, Bel- grave on the short end. Down 3-0 going into the third, Belgrave struck hard, pushing four across the plate. Wingham reacted quickly, scoring four of their own in the bottom half to bring the totals to 7-4. Curtis Knight and Justin Camp- bell crossed the plate in the fourth to bring the visitors to within one, but Wingham could not be held off. They added another four. Back-to-back first inning home runs by Gary Pipe and Todd Uhrig gave the Brussels Tigers a 2-1 win over Seaforth Plumbing and Heating Wednesday night in put the ball neatly in the corner and the game was tied. Newton continued to put the pressure on and scored. Following a corner kick Newton headed the ball into the net. At half time the Brussels team juggled the lineup and Tyler Bragg moved from forward to keeper. Kirk Baillie continued his strong role as full- back. Adam Carr was aggressive as centre halfback, and controlled centre field. Late in the game Kirk Baillic moved to forward. He and Terry Brown created several good scoring opportunities. The Newton team played a strong positional game and Brussels had difficulty preventing Newton players from scoring at close range. Leslie Baillie continued her solid work at half back breaking up numerous Newton attacks. Newton continued its steady attack and ended up winning 10-2. Kevin Hopf and Myron Hussey brought Belgrave closer in the fifth, with a run each before Wingham topped off their hitting with one more in the bottom of the inning. Belgrave made a strong attempt to overtake the hometowners, rally- ing for three in the sixth and falling one run short. Other runs scored in the game were earned by Knight (two), Campbell (two), Ricky Buchannan, Adam Potter and Tim Robinson. It was a well-played game with Campbell and Craig Marks sharing pitching duties while Myron Hussey caught. Seaforth. Uhrig, who allowed only three base runners while striking out 13, went the distance giving up the Seaforth run in their last at bat. Sunday night Uhrig batted four for four in leading the Tigers to an 8-2 win over their crosstown rival Bulldogs. Bryan Neill enjoyed a three RBI against his former teammates while Mike Watson led the Bulldog attack, going two for three, including a homerun. Doug Conley threw a five inning, five hitter for the win with Uhrig hurling two hitless innings of relief. Andrew McCutcheon, Dave Smith and Watson shared pitching duties for the Dogs. The Tigers arc at home Friday to Seaforth, then travel to Belgrave Sunday night to meet the Blue Devils. The Bulldogs were in Walton last night and are at home to the Zurich Rangers Sunday at 7:30. The Huron County Fastball League has accepted a challenge from the Goderich Industrial League for a home and home t. '- Star Game. Panthers 0-4-0 Opt. The Brussels Lawn Bowling Club started the 1996 season with a rained out tournament Thursday, June 6. The players had all arrived when the rains came down so it turned into a euchre tournament. The tournament was sponsored by the CIBC and J. L. McCutcheon Motors Ltd. Winners of the euchre were: ladies, first, Mary Higgins, Mit- chell; second, Mickey Kindersma, Stratford; third, Ken Barbour, Brussels, playing as a lady; fourth, Gladys Cook, Stratford; fifth, Verna Rathwell, Atwood; consola- tion, Vera Lindner, Atwood; men's high, John Kindersma, Stratford; second, Ray Buchanan, Atwood; third, Lloyd Cook, Stratford; fourth, Jim Coultes; consolation, Joe White, Palmerston. A prize for lowest combined score for one team of bowlers went to Vera Lindner and Jack Broughton. A casserole and salad supper was served by the women of the Brussels Club. Even the weather can't stop lawn bowlers from enjoying their afternoon. Most clubs report a late start in bowling due to the weather and problems with winterkill on the greens. Brussels is planning a 'Tetley Tea' sponsored "Round Robin" when they will entertain as many new bowlers as possible.
