Leading off this week's new releases is Leaving Las Vegas ***la
(MGM/UA) a critically acclaimed, but grim drama about an alcoholic
drinking himself to death and a prostitute who falls in love with him.
Although Nicholas Cage won an Oscar for his performance and Elizabeth
Shue is also terrific, I found most of the film very unpleasant. (Rated R -
for language, violence and sexual situations)
You could hardly describe Grumpier Old Men ** (Warner) as great art,
but this amiable sequel starring Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon as
squabbling neighbours trying to stop a voluptuous newcomer (Sophia
Loren) fromm turning an old bait shop into an Italian restaurant does have
its moments. Also in the cast are Ann Margret, Daryl Hanna and Burgess
Meredith as Lemmon's randy father. The outtakes during the end credits
are the funniest part of the film. (Rated PG-13)
Director Steven Speilberg was so moved by what he had learned during
the making of his epic film Schindler's List that he created a non-profit
organization dedicated to the finding and interviewing Holocaust
survivors in order to preserve the memory of what happened to so many
innocent victims before, during and after World War II. Survivors of the
Holocaust **** (Turner/Malofilm - $19.95 or less) is a heartrending and
moving document told without narration by those who lived these most
heinous of horrors. The documentary also includes extra footage hosted by
Ben Kinsley which takes us behind the scenes at the Survivors of the
Shoah Visual History Foundation. As Speilberg points out "the majority of
Holocaust survivors are in their 70s and 80s and the window for capturing
their testimonies is closing fast."
The foundation has already conducted thousands of interviews with
hopefully more to come. Eventually through CD-ROMS and other
groundbreaking online technology over 100,000 hours of survivor
testimony will be available to schools, libraries, museums and other
educational institutions. Highly recommended! (Unrated)
In the classics department you might like to check out two excellent
films making their first appearance on home video. It has been many years
since I first saw The Story of Alexander Graham Bell *** (Fox -.$24.95 or
less), but I remember it to be quite good although Don Ameche's
performance in the title role has always seemed a, bit too earnest for my
taste. Among the topnotch supporting cast is Henry Fonda, Loretta Young,
Charles Coburn and Canadian born Gene Lockhart. (Unrated)
While Sergeant Rutledge ***1/2 (Warner - $14.95) may be one of
director John Ford's lesser films, I have always been quite fond of it. Told
in flashback, the story focuses on a black cavalry officer (Woody Strode),
accused of rape and murder. The cast includes most of Ford's regular stock
company of actors. Recommended! (Unrated)

Learning bus safety
Youngsters preparing for Junior Kindergarten at Walton
Public School in September, were treated to a bus ride,
May 28, while OPP Constable John Marshall explained
bus safety rules. The children were shown how to
properly board and unload the bus as well as being given
material for their parents to read. Several parents went
along for the ride.

June 23 was Grey's Track and
Field Day. Most events were
completed on that day, but some
had to be done on the following
day because of rain.
Based on points for ribbons, the
top athlete in each division was:
Mites, Sasha Ruttan, 23 points and
Eric VanVeen and Chris Crawford
(tied), 10 points; Tykes, Paula
Bowles, 23; Brian VanVeen, 11
points; Atoms, Stacey Bowles, 23
points and Tyler Campbell, 15
points; Bantam, Jenny Wildman,
who had a total of 20 points and
Chad Fischer, 15 points.
There were many other excellent
athletes and everyone's efforts are
appreciated. The school would
especially like to thank Mrs. Diehl
for assisting in track and field by
recording the winners of events and
distributing ribbons to them. Over
100 pupils from Grey will be
competing at the North Huron
The UCW meet this Wednesday
with Murray and Olene Dennis

Opening with what is coming to
be known as their theme song they_
played, Help Me Be a Witness.
Such favourites as The Old
Rugged Cross and Church in the
Wildwood were performed. A
reading called, 'The Touch of the
Master's Hand' was read while
Sweet Hour of Prayer was played
in the background.
Don McDonald and Graeme
Craig, accompanied by Patty
Banks, sang For Those Tears I
Died. Gloria Wilbee did a
wonderful job singing Peace In the
Valley and the new singing
sensations, 'Duff's Angels'
performed, All God's Critters Got a
Place in the Choir and Lead Me
Jesus.
It was a very entertaining night
capped off by lunch and fellowship
afterwards.

The Grade 5/6 class has been
doing a program called Junior
Achievement. Mr..Keith Mulvey
goes to their class for a quarter of a
day each week and they learn
primarily about the business world.
On his first visit, they were put
into groups and each given a made-
up business to run. They had to
appoint people to positions in the
business such as manager and
spokesperson. They learned about
how much building a business
would cost and they learned the
skills necessary to make it
successful. Some of the things that
they found out were marketing,
advertising and business
