On June 22, the club will host an evening of magical entertainment for the entire family as well as offering $7,500 in prize money. The $40 ticket includes a hot buf- fet for two with no charge for chil- dren under 12 and performances by Canadian Magic Man Stephen Lynn and well-known comic men- talist Mike Mandel. "It will be an evening of profes- sional entertainment," says Lion Greg Ducharme. "The show is awe- some. The performers go the whole nine yards." By Bonnie Gropp Needing a little incentive to get you moving? The Ark is hosting a walk-a-thon on June 8 and is look- ing for participants as well as spon- sors for this community fundraiser. Youth Worker with the drop-in centre Wendy Martin says the monies raised from the walk will be used to fund the summer programs at the facility. These include the Junior Summer Recreation Pro- gram (JRSP) for children in Grades 1-5, the return of the SWAT team for youths from Grades 5-8 with a maximum of 20 and a senior drop- in on Thursday nights for the high school group. This year's walk will be to Wing- ham. "The other years the walk has been to Seaforth and Listowel, so I guess it can be done, " says Martin. It will depart from The Ark, located across from the post office in Brus- sels, at 9 a.m. Martin says there will be pit stops along the way before reaching the final destina- tion of Bell's Pizza. Prizes will be awarded to the top Lynn will take the stage at approximately 6:30 p.m., with his "good, clean fun." "The thing about magic is that is is illogical," says Lynn. "It is some- times more fun to perform for accountants than for children." Kids just accept a trick or an illu- sion and shrug it off, saying "Its magic', but adults will say they have to figure it out and when they can't it drives them nuts." Stating he has no special powers, Lynn says one can do any trick, with 20 years experience. For Mandel, the journey through illusions has taken him to many venues across Canada, the United States and Australia, over the last 21 years. fundraisers. With the end of the government grant, which had helped to keep The Ark operating over the past two years, Martin stresses the importance of community support for this event. "Without it we will Brussels council awarded tenders for three blocks of sidewalks Mon- day night, even though it may go over budget on the project. The tender for a block each on Flora St., Turnberry St. (near the old Callandar Nursing Home) and Hawke St. came in at $8,921.13 from the lone bidder, Bill Scott Construction. That's under the bud- get for the project of $10,000 but there will be additional costs for removing the old sidewalk and buying gravel for under the side- walk. "Those took like fairly good prices and Bill does good work," said Councillor Greg Wilson, chair of the roads committee. He suggested town workers try to look for savings in areas such as Colleges, universities and high schools are popular audiences for Mandel as he convinces the young people to act like a monkey, crow like a rooster or really believe they have seen aliens. As Canada's premier mentalist, Mandel has an amazing ability to control people's minds. Mandel's performance will begin between 7:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. This year's Lions' celebration may prove to be the best yet, with more prize money available, a grand prize of $5,000 and hilarious entertainment.
