HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 1996-05-08, Page 38• By John Schedler This week turns out to be one of those rare times when not much is happening on the home video scene. Only a few new titles are scheduled including It Takes Two (Warner - $24.95 or less) another remake of Mark Twain's Prince and the Pauper mixed with Disney's Parent Trap and starring those obnoxious Olsen twins. (Rated PG) While Carrington (Polygram) received mixed reviews the acting, especially Emma Thompson's Oscar nominated performance will make it a must see for some. (Rated 18A) For Classic film fans there is Tales of Manhattan (Fox - $24.95 or less), an intriguing movie produced in 1942 focusing on a dress tailcoat and the effect it has on the lives of its various owners. The cast is a veritable Hollywood who's who including Henry Fonda, Charles Boyer, Ginger Rogers, Charles Laughton, Edward G. Robinson, Ethel Waters, Paul Robeson, Eddie "Rochester" Anderson, Thomas Mitchell, Cesar Romero, George Sanders and W.C. Fields, whose segment originally hit the cutting room floor during the film's original release. Advance copies were unavailable for preview so I will be checking out this one at my local video outlet. (Unrated) As part of that group of aging baby boomers who finds very little of interest on broadcast television I recently decided to check out one of the offerings from the Columbia House Video Club. The show that finally caught my interest among all the oldies offered here is The Adventures of Superman which was the first program I remember seeing on that new 19 inch Roger Majestic which arrived in our living room in 1954. "Faster than a speeding bullets, more powerful than a locomotive, able to leap tall buildings with a single bound and so on. This high powered opening remains burned into my memory to this day and thanks to the two volumes in my library I can now relive them anytime I wish. But, you ask, how do the shows themselves stand up in the light of today's high tech special effects? I guess that really isn't the point because while most of the plots were paper thin, the special effects fairly cheezy, (bolstered by stock footage and costumes from old movies) it's the cast which includes George Reeves (Superman/Clark Kent). Nocll Neil or Phyllis Coates (Lois Lane), Jack Larson (Jimmy Olsen) and John Hamilton (Perry White) that accounts for much of Superman's considerable charm. Please note some of the episodes are in black and white and some in colour. Great fun! video F.A.X. IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY. J.R.'S GAS BAR & TAKE OUT LTD.
