Have you discovered one of
Huron County's natural treasures
tucked away on a scenic gravel
road in East Wawanosh Twp.?
The Wawanosh Valley Conserva-
tion Area, owned and managed by
the Maitland Valley Conservation
Authority (MVCA), is open year
round for visitors. The trails wind
along the Maitland River and
across the Belgrave Creek where
the skunk cabbages are showing off
their purple elf-shoe flowers. The
meadows are alive with the sounds
of besting meadowlarks and
bobolinks. In the following weeks
the ostrich ferns and red trilliums
will be pushing through the rich
soils of the hemlock forest.
The Wawanosh Valley Conserva-
tion Area is the location of the
Wawanosh Nature Centre, an
education facility visited by
thousands of schoolchildren and
adults annually. The activities led
by the MVCA staff are geared to a
hands-on approach to investiga-
tions of the natural environment.
You may find younger students on
their hands and knees, searching for
small creatures in the fields, forest
and creek and observing them with
magnifying glasses. Older students
take part in activities that help them
learn about local problems such as
soil erosion and water pollution.
This spring, several classes have
been planting shrubs for wildlife
habitat and building wildlife
shelters. Later in the season they
will be surveying lady beetle
populations for the Canadian
Nature Federation.
Guides and Scouts, as well as
many other community groups, use
the Wawanosh Nature Centre on
weekends to participate in activities
that lead to a better understanding
of the environment.
Although spring is a busy season

Conservation Authority at 519-335-

Centre is located between Wing-
ham and Blyth west of Hwy. 4 on

East Wawanosh Twp.
Sparks clean up
The Brownies, Sparks and
Guides cleaned up the ball park and
around the Community Centre on
Thursday, May 2. They divided
into groups of two Sparks, two
Brownies and two Guides.
Bridgette Kellington and Nicole
Meier learned how to use the
compass. Kerrie Meier and Nicole
Procter taught them.
The evening finished with the
Brownies, Sparks and Guides going
to the arena. They played games
and sang songs.
