THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, MAY 8, 1996 PAGE 25.
Get decked out for summer
Ahhh summertime ... warm
days, twilight evenings and long
lazy weekends spent getting
reacquainted with the backyard
hammock, the garden, family,
friends and neighbours.
Throughout history, people have
enjoyed entertaining guests outside.
Although the style and settings
have changed through the
centuries, the variety that outdoor
entertaining offers makes every
get-together unique and
memorable.
With a little ingenuity, the, back-
yard can become an appropriate
setting for a formal reception or a
family barbecue. Either way, out-
door entertaining expert and Home
"Deckonomist" Barb Holland says
successful and imaginative
functions held outdoors can
demand even more attention to
detail than indoor events.
Holland, who acquired the
unique "Deckonomist" title to
reflect her specialty in outdoor
living, says while backyard events
are often more laid back, things
like timing, mood, menu, serving
format and guest comfort, can
make or break the occasion.
She offers these helpful tips to
add ambiance, flair and creative
touches to summer get-togethers:
Y For evening entertaining pay
close attention to lighting for
guest convenience and to set the
mood. Twinkling holiday lights,
coloured spotlights, outdoor
garden lighting and candles will
all add a warm glow to your
festival atmosphere.
* Get creative with your outdoor
table setting. Make it as beautiful
and functional as you would for
an indoor setting. Use special
touches to tie in with your
surroundings or deck decor. Fresh
cut flowers from your garden
make a great centerpiece that
complements the landscape.
Floral tablecloths, placemats and
napkins are unexpected, elegant
touches.
* Spend ample time planning
your music selection. A pre-
programmed line-up of CDs or a
customized arrangement on
cassette will keep your hands free

and things in swing. Skew the
music to the crowd and function.
Have a mix of tunes to suit a
variety of tastes, and consider that
a moonlight wine and cheese calls
for a different selection than a
mid-day pool party.
IR If windy conditions are
expected, arrange utensils in a
basket and ask guests to help
themselves. Use double-sided
carpet tape on the bottom of
tablecloths and serving plates so
they'll stick securely to the table.
* For an improvised outdoor
cooler that complements the deck,
try oak garden barrels lined with a
plastic bag and well stocked with
ice. To prolong the barrels'
chilling capacity, line the interior
with a thin layer of flexible foam.
Antique wheelbarrows, freshly
painted, also make stylish ice
buckets. Surround them with old
fashioned milk jugs blooming
with fresh picked flowers for an
added touch.
* Add backyard ambiance with
pleasantly scented designer
citronella candles during biting
bug season.
Er Be sure to locate some loungers
and chairs in well shaded parts of
the yard, and have plenty of
sunscreen available for guests. For
larger, more formal parties, rented
tables and chairs provide a
classier look than assorted patio
furniture hauled in from the
neighbourhood.
* If your guest list exceeds the
capacity of your barbecue, reduce
the emphasis on grilled foods.
Consider asking friends to loan
you their gas barbecues, but be
sure to allow enough preparation
time so that there are no last
minute surprises. Also consider
make-ahead entrees as part of the
menu to minimize time in the
kitchen on your big day.
* Be specific with your guests as
to whether children are invited.
Playing party host and camp
director simultaneously isn't easy.
If children are expected, hire a
sitter or enlist one of your older
children to keep them entertained.
Although scheduling can be a
challenge at the best of times,
Holland says to resist picking any
open day on the calendar. Choose a
day of the week and a time that
makes the best fit for the type of
backyard function that's planned.
Hosting a pool party for people
from work demands different
scheduling (and a longer lead time)
than a simple backyard barbecue
for the couple down the road.
Finally, do as much as you can a
few days ahead of the get-together.
And rest up the night before so
you'll be fresh, vibrant and in a
welcoming mood for company.
"Regardless of all the trimmings
and ambiance, it'll all be to no avail
if your entertaining jitters get the
better of you."
