The waterfall can be manufac- tured from shale and flagstone. When it came time to get the pump for the waterfall and foun- tain, the Fortunes were surprised to discover ,nat two small ,- •q would be less expensive to buy and more cost-efficient to run than one large one. "Anyone who sells these pumps, which you can buy at nurs- eries or large home and building centres, can tell you the capacity you need. Just take them the dimensions of the pond and they will be able to determine the amount of water you're moving and what kind of pump you need." Lighting kits and landscaping were the final phases for the pond. Groundcover works well at filling in cracks between the flagstone. "Be careful what you put in around the pond, because leaves falling in will block the pump filters," she says. While many people enjoy fish and plantlife in their pond, the For- tunes decided to do without. "They .ire used primarily to keep the algae and bacteria limited but we find with two pumps we are getting enough water movement. Also, if you have a pond that's not too deep, you have to bring the fish out in the winter." Preparing the pond for the cold season is relatively simple. The Fortunes pumped out some water and removed the pumps, then when spring arrived they emptied it and refilled it. The project, which Gerry esti- mates cost them between $2,000 and $2,500, took two months to complete, something that could be cut considerably if a backhoe was rented for the digging. =Montgomery Ez,a.
