Family transforms trailer to turreted dream home
Frances and a casual dining area
with a view of the front lawn.
Bearss has included some unique
features in the present dining room
such as a decorative mounting
around the chandelier, three-layer
cove molding and dark green trim
paint, offset against the white ceil-
ing. The effect is striking, attractive
and yet, comfortable. The turret
creates a bay window in the dining
area, allowing space to seat more
guests or a very sunny nook for

Nearing completion
Exterior renovations to the home are almost complete, with special touches on the turrets,
roof, siding, porch and a unique hexagonal window on the second floor.
By Janice Becker
It was transformed from a dou-
ble-wide trailer to a two-storey,
3,000 square foot turreted home
with modem amenities and added
luxuries.
What started as a simple home
has developed into an eye-catching
residence next to Blyth Brook and
Hwy 4 in the village.
The total redesign of the home
began approximately 15 years ago
when then-owners Harold and Ade-
line Campbell hoisted the double-
wide onto railroad ties, enabling a
ground floor to be constructed
below.
"It was quite a sight from the
highway," says present-owner and
son-in-law Steve Bearss. "The trail-
er had to be stabilized with cables
to nearby trees. The railroad ties
were difficult to see from the road
so it appeared as though the build-
ing was suspended on air."
"It caused more than a few near
accidents," he laughs.
Finding a niche
Every inch of available space
is put to use the kitchen. The
outside curve of an island was
opened to allow for the display
of flowers or curios.
The three-bedroom trailer was
modified to create extra living
space on the ground floor and
accommodate an adult child.
However, when Steve and
Frances Bearss took over occupan-
cy, with a growing family, more
room was required. Interior and
exterior renovations began in
earnest.
A veteran of construction and
owner of his own contracting busi-
ness, Bearss developed the new
structure for the home.
The first step was to redefine the
roof line, allowing the complete
remodeling and redesigning of the
home. From the flat roof of the
mobile home, Bearss added a pitch
and included the unique cosmetic
structure of the turrets.
"I wanted to create the look of an
old Victorian style cottage. I got
the idea from a dream home which
I helped build for the Toronto
Dream Show a few years ago."
To follow that theme, Bearss cus-
tom bent aluminum trim for the
soffits and fascia to replicate the
wood-carved designs of forebear-
ers.
The next move was to add an
extra bedroom for the latest addi-
tion to the family and the total ren-
ovation of the interior.
Several feet of floor space had
been added to the rear of the home
prior to the roof redesign, permit-
ting the concept of the remaining
mobile home structure to be opened
up, walls removed and a better use
of the space attained.
On the upper floor, the main liv-
ing area, a tiny kitchen was con-
verted to a very open concept with
a large work area overlooking the
family room, which was built in the
new floor space.
To make use of wasted space on
the outside curve of the kitchen
island, Bearss cut two tubby holes
to provide a display area for dried
flower arrangements or favourite
curios.
Though still in the process of
remodeling, Bearss' will soon have
a formal dining room overlooking
the brook, a main floor office for
