While no one can dispute the
quality of a new home, many peo-
ple prefer the quiet elegance of
older residences.
However, while the distinct
charm of these Victorian beauties is
a definite plus, they also present a
variety of challenges. In addition to
age and the lively irregularity of the
architecture, changing lifestyles
have altered the way these rooms
are used. Where once the kitchen
was the domain of the chief cook
and bottle washer, it has in this
busy world of the latter 20th centu-
ry, evolved into the principle centre
for family and informal entertain-
ing.
When Merle and Rhonda Hoegy
purchased their Brussels home
eight years ago, they knew that
something would eventually have
to be done about the kitchen. "It
always felt that the house was just
wrong," says Rhonda. An enclosed
porch on the south side led out to a
garage and small patio area. The
kitchen had two hot water rads, and
seven doorways, and housed the
washer and dryer. There was limit-
ed cupboard space and approxi-
mately four feet of counter top.
"The first thought was that there
should be some way for the sun to
come in at the south side. That was
the feeling and (the project) just got
bigger and bigger."
