The Walkerburn Club met at
Ruth McClinchey's home on April
29 at 2 p.m.
Vera Penfound opened the
meeting with "My Dad" which
brought back memories. She
followed this with "Is Winter
Tough?"
Ethel Ball led in prayer. Kay
Lapp gave a farewell address to
Ruth. She and her husband, as bride
and groom, settled on this farm in
October 1958. Ruth became a
valuable member of the club.
Members are sorry to see them
move but wish them happiness in
their new abode in Goderich. The
club presented Ruth with a farewell
gift and Ruth thanked them.
The secretary read the minutes
and treasurer Ruth gave the
financial report. Pat Hunking won
the draw, which was donated by
Betty Archambault. Betty had an
April birthday so she had to pay her
fine.
The May meeting will be at the
home of Betsy Verwey. Bernice
Norman will be lunch convenor
and Vera Penfound the program
organizer.
It was decided to make a quilt to
donate to the tornado victims. Ethel
Ball will investigate whether non-
perishable food is needed there.
The club was delighted to learn
that Betsy Verwey won the club
quilt, on which tickets were sold.
This had been displayed in Blyth.
Bernice Norman gave two
readings "My Garden" and "Little
Things". She conducted a contest
on "Trees" which was enjoyed.
Ethel read an article on the
evaporator that was in Auburn until
1943. The temperature fell so low
then that orchards were killed,
which meant the end of the
evaporator.
She also gave the story of many
doctors who served the district
through the years. The last doctor
was Dr. Weir, whom a number of
members recalled. There was an
honour celebration for him in 1965
which eldest club member, Martha
Daer, had attended.
Ethel closed with "Prayer for
Spring Cleaning" and "Make a
fresh start."
Grace was sung and the hostess
and Vera served delicious breads
and cheese and a social half hour
enjoyed.
As a footnote, word was received
May 2 from Mildred Ament of
Blyth who was an active member
of the club until she moved that
$134.50 had been made on the quilt
ticket sale.
