Planting for the future
The yard at Blyth Public School received two additions, May 3, when John Gibson of
TREEmendous, Clinton, helped the Grade 1 class plant two trees, a pyramid English Oak
and, pictured here, a Weeping Japanese Cherry. The trees were planted to commemorate
Arbor Week and the school's anniversary.

Grey Central Echo
Grade 8 grads get photos taken
The Grade 8s also have had their
graduation pictures taken and will
be making graduation plans. Some
students from Grade 7/8 will be
participating in a bordenball
tournament at East Wawanosh on
May 7. Their coaches are Mrs.
Colquhoun, Mrs.Miller, and Mrs.
Heam.
Sixteen pupils in Grade 4-6 have
been participating in a level 2
enrichment at our school. They
learned to play cribbage which
involves strategy, math skills and
pattern recognition.
On Friday, May 10, level 3
enrichment for students in the
North Huron schools will be held at
Grey Central.
FEATURING MR. GARLAND'S
GRADE 5/6 CLASS
By Katie Sprout
and Jessie VanLoo
Here at Grey Central a lot of
things have been going on.
For instance, Grades 7-8 planted
eighty trees. Forty white cedars
along the primary yard fence by the
road and forty white spruce along
the corridor. Grades 5 and 6
planted 20 green ash in the pond
area. The school will be planting a
crimson red maple on the front
lawn in memory of David Harrison.
The Environmental Steering
Committee is planning to put an
orchard at the edge of the full-
grown bush. This will probably be
done soon.
On April 18, 58 Grade 5 and 6
pupils, plus three teachers and 18
parents loaded buses for a two-day
trip to Amherstburg and Windsor to
finish off their black study unit.
They visited the North American
Black Historical Museum and
Culture Centre. It was Mac
Simpson's dream to see a museum
built for children to learn about
slavery and freedom. They went to
the First Baptist Church for some
history, supper and singing. This
church was build by fugitive slaves
in 1853.
For supper there was fried
chicken, salad and rice. This
delicious supper was made by the
cooks at the church. The pupils
sang for some members of the
church and they sang different
national anthems for the students.
Then the students went to the
Forrester Secondary School to
spend the night on the floor in the
gym with a divider in the centre.
Breakfast was served at the school
cafeteria before they set out for
another bus ride to Dresden. When
they arrived at Dresden, they
explored Uncle Tom's Cabin and
looked around the museum. There
are two grave sites, one for Josiah
Henson's family members and one
just across the road for fugitive
slaves. This African-Canadian
Heritage Tour was a good
experience for the students.
Track and Field Day is coming
