Considering learning
Teachers from across the region gathered at F.E. Madill
Secondary School, April 26, to listen to guest speakers
and look over new educational matters offered by
suppliers. Seminar topics included speakers from Japan
Canada Friendship Bridge, London Cross Cultural
Learning Centre, Red Cross, Canadian Peacekeeping,
Grey Central Public School, Canada Food Grains Bank
and St. Marys Children of Chernobyl. The information
available to teachers was vast and extensive. Here,
Hullett Central Public School Teacher Al Sanders checks
out a new Crayon product.

Lapps celebrate 50th year
Working together and never fly-
ing off the handle have brought
Elliot and Catherine (Kay) Lapp
through 50 years of marriage,
which they celebrated recently with
family and friends.
Wed April 19, 1946, by Rev.
Barnard at Sparta United Church,
Ell and Kay (Wood) Lapp began
their married life at Oxford Centre,
then Norwich before moving to
Huron County. They had met in a
tobacco field, at the ages of 17 and
18 and tied the knot when Mr. Lapp
returned from overseas.
Mr. Lapp was employed by farm-
ers before beginning his own dairy
herd on VLA land, in Huron Coun-
ty.
"We lived on that farm for three
years before hydro came," says
Mrs. Lapp. "We had a gas driven
washer and Coleman stove."
UCW meets
The April meeting of Londesboro
UCW was held at the church on
Monday, April 22. It began at
1:30 p.m. with dessert followed by
the meeting at 2 p.m.
They opened the meeting with
the UCW Purpose. The worship
service was conducted by Sherry
Postma and Linda Horbanuik.
Linda spoke on Dr. David Suzuki.
Sherry read points on environment
and recycling. Members sang For
the Beauty of the Earth. Sherry
gave the scripture. Linda ended the
service with a reading.
Helen read the minutes of the
March meeting and the World Day
of Prayer service. Correspondence
was read from Jack and Marion
Snell and Norman and Annie
Vincent. Cheryl read a letter about
Camp Menesetung.
Roll call for May is underwear
for children and two to three dozen
cookies with the recipe.
Reta gave the treasurer's report
Collection was taken up.
There will be a bake sale at the
hall and yard sale at the church on
May 18. The May meeting is at the
church at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May
16 to plan garage sale and have a
short meeting. Donations are
needed for the garage sale. Bring
them to the church after May 12.
Seniors enjoy
potluck dinner
The April meeting of Londesboro
Happy Gang Seniors was held at
the hall on Wednesday, April 24. It
began at 12:30 p.m. with a pot luck
meal.
Marie Flynn, Elgin Knott,
Warren Whitmore and Wilson
McCarthy, The Huron Strings
Orchestra, provided a half hour of
entertainment. This was very much
enjoyed.
The minutes of the March
meeting were read. Reta gave the
financial report. Betty HuIley gave
a report on the Dashwood Rally last
week.
The fall rally is in Blyth on Oct.
21.
Lunch for May: cakes, Beth
Knox and Genevieve Allen; ice
cream, Renee Snell and Ruth
Vincent; KP, Reta Kelland and
Phyllis Tyndall.
Five tables of euchre were played
with the winners being: ladies'
high, Margaret Taylor, ladies' lone
hands, Betty Archambault; ladies'
low, Hazel Watkins; men's high,
Ted Fothergill; men's lone hands,
Vietta Hoggart: men's low, Reg
Lawson.
The Lapps also acknowledge the
help of neighbours such as
Lawrence Plaetzer and Maurice
Bean for their "getting along."
"No one had much back then and
we all shared equipment and helped
each other," says Mrs. Lapp.
Along with raising three children,
William in Abbottsford, B.C.,
Keith, who now runs the family
farm and Nancy Denys who farms
near Kippen, the Lapps were
involved in several community
groups.
Over the years, between helping
with the dairy cattle and tending
her gardens, Mrs. Lapp has been a
member of the UCW, WI, Walker-
burn Club and Horticultural Soci-
ety, while Mr. Lapp has kept busy
with the Legion, Horticultural Soci-
ety, church choir and is a charter
member of the Blyth Festival
Greeters at Londesboro United
Church on Sunday, April 28 were
Ken and Laura Scott. Ushers were
Traci Radford and Erica
Horbanuik.
The junior choir sang. Shannon
Scott played the piano to
accompany Sophia Kelley on the
Choir.
The Lapps are members of Knox
United Church.
Since retiring from farming 10
years ago, Mr. Lapp enjoys wood-
working, which he undertakes in
his shop at their Hullett Twp.
home, as well as fishing.
To mark the special occasion of
their 50th wedding anniversary, the
family arranged an open house at
Knox United Church on April 21.
The Denys children decorated the
tables beautifully and the Lapp
children served lunch and anniver-
sary cake.
Friends and neighbours from
Auburn and district, London,
Waterloo, Ingersoll and Verschoyle
gathered.
Numerous gifts and cards were
received to wish the couple many
more happy years.

Karen Popp read the second
scripture from John 10: 1-10. The
sermon topic was "More Stories
About Camp".
The women's trio is to practice
next Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
Rev. Paul Ross conducted the
service at Aubum's Knox United
Church, Sunday, April 28. Nancy
Park was organist.
The Invitation to Worship was
read alternately, followed by the
opening chorus. Rev. Ross gave the
prayers. Wise Men Seeking Jesus
was sung.
The children's chorus was sung
and Rev. Ross told the children's
story. They then went down to
Church School.
Hymn The Lord's My Shepherd
was sung. Rev. Ross's message was
"More Stories About Camp."
The offering was received by
Greg Park and Bob Worsell and
dedicated. Hymn He Leadeth Me
was sung.
Rev. Ross pronounced the
benediction and the singing of
amen's concluded the service.

Congratulations to Larry and
Linda Plaetzer on the birth of a
daughter Janette Marlene, a wee
sister for Jeff and Jamie, a
grandchild for Jean and Lawrence
Plaetzer and Tom and Ila Cunning-
ham.
