THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, MAY 1, 1996 East Wawanosh students speak of fair to WI It was an unseasonably cold, snowy night on Tuesday, April 16, but the atmosphere inside the WI Hall, Belgrave was warm and inviting. The Belgrave Women's Institute and their guests gathered to hold the annual meeting and hear presentations from EWPS winners of public speaking and science fair competitions. The evening began at 6:30 p.m. when President Dorothy Coultes invited all to a bountiful pot luck meal. A large number of members and parents and friends of the guest speakers were present. After the meal, the young people were introduced by convenor Kay Roberts. Interesting, well prepared and often humorous presentations were given by science fair winners, Jonathan Cucksey, whose topic was The Brownies and Sparks met at their usual time on Thursday, April 25 at the East Wawanosh Public School. There were six Brownies work- ing on their cyclist badge. The girls learned bicycle safety, how to stop, turning signals, what to do when they come out of their laneways, controlling the bicycle at all times, what they should do at stoplights, as well as proper care of their bicycles. They were taught why it's important to wear a bicycle helmet, as well as proper clothing for bike riding, and the use of reflectors or lights when riding in the dark. Pylons were set up and the girls used the skills they had been taught as they went through the obstacle course. Bridget Kellington and Nicole Meier attended the Girl Guide meeting. Morris Twp. residents gathered Thursday April 4 to discuss plans for the 140th anniversary of the township. It was determined that the Bel- grave Kinsmen will apply for the liquor license and Morris Twp. council will donate $4,000 towards start-up costs for the Aug. 3 cele- bration. From committee reports, the group heard the parade will begin at 11 a.m., volleyball will run from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. and Bluevale Recreation will work in co-opera- tion with the Kinsmen for the beer tent, which will stay open until 8 p.m., or 9 p.m. if there is no teen dance. Sue Gowing, representing The Ark in Brussels, says they are con- sidering hosting a teen dance, but are concerned about liability. The fiddle jamboree will enter- tain attendees from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. when the Kinsmen will take 'Worms' and Tim Jerva, who spoke on and demonstrated 'Suspension'. Public speaking winners were Kristen Gerth and Myron Hussey. They informed the audience about "Silken Lauman" and "Growing Up". A round of applause and small tokens of appreciation were given to the young people. The business portion of the meeting then began with the main item of importance being the installation of new branch officers for the coming year. Marjorie Anderson, Londesboro, Huron West WI president officiated at the swearing in ceremony. Officers are as follows: past president, Dorothy Coultes; presi- dent, Audrey Fenton; first vice president, Wilma Higgins; second vice president, Ruth Gordon; secretary-treasurer, Dianne Robin- son; assistant secretary-treasurer, The Sparks enjoyed a nature walk, played basketball and played games outside with the Brownies. This bought the evening to a close. On Thursday, May 2 the girls will be doing a "Community Clean Up". Mabel's Moms discuss wills Mabel's Moms met at their regular time on Wednesday, April 24. Attending were: Sherri Sippel, Christi, Scott, Daniel and Claren Yuill; Connie Shiell, Christopher, and Andrea; Lila Procter and Ben; Sandra Dorsch and Melinda; Elaine Scott and Paton; Linda Hess and Andrew; Kim Higgins and Laura. The topics discussed were "Wills and Guardians". over with a roast beef barbecue and dance. The meal is $10 for adults and $6 for children 12 and under. Adult tickets, 700, and children's tickets, 300, are being printed. Tickets for Smokey Roads, who have been booked for the dance, will sell for $8 a single or $15 a ouple. Age of majority is required. For souvenir hunters, hats, T- shirts, golf shirts, mugs and spoons will be available. Entries for the logo contest are due April 30. Chairs and tables will be rented from Wingham at a cost of $.50 and $1, respectively. Edward Fuels will be asked to donate flags for decoration and the Ministry of Transportation will be contacted regarding decorations along Hwy 4. A property decorating contest, in keeping with the theme, will also be held. New President Audrey Fenton presided over the remainder of the meeting. Members had an oppor- tunity to pay membership dues and Home and Country publications were distributed. 40 gather for games of euchre The seniors bowling scores for Wednesday, April 24 were: Annie Cook, 78, 81; Laura Johnston, 123, 107; Evelyn Galbraith, 106, 122, Doris Michie, 105, 160; Grace Walden, 91, 164; Jean Walker, 133, 120; Doris Remington, 141, 107; Mae Loutitt, 129, 123; Alice Nicholson, 98, 89; Marj Coultes, 146, 143; Eleanor Neall, 101, 92; Mabel Wheeler, 116, 116. There were 10 tables of euchre in play at the Women's Institute Hall on Wednesday, April 24. Winners were: high lady, Marie Stewart; second high lady, Lillian Appleby; lone hands, Aileen Leddy; low lady, Viola Edgar; high man, Kay Rich (playing as a man); second high man, Jack Taylor; lone hands, Allan Edgar; low man, Gordon Thedorf. Guides hear of careers The Belgrave Guides were pleased to learn about four careers, Thursday, April 25 in the Belgrave Community Centre. These were Massage Therapy by Kitty Hartlieb, Food Service by Patti Nixon, Cosmetics by Louise Priestap and Dental Care by Sheila Armstrong. Treats were served by the girls. Various badges and emblems were handed out to the girls such as outdoor adventure, track, horizon, emblem, dancer, and outdoor environment. There are still cookies left so if you were missed, call Barb Pletch at 357-1967. Roll call was answered with "A career I would choose if I were young again." Jean Nethery and Isabelle Craig will look into inquiries concerning members attending a Blyth Theatre performance and meal as a cultural outing this summer. Next months' meeting features a special meeting with John and Rev, and Mrs. John Roberts attended the Ontario Gamanfa Ganu Association Welsh Festival at the Sheraton Falls View Hotel in Niagara Falls on the weekend of April 19 - 21. They sang at the informal variety concert on Friday evening and also attended several functions on Saturday culminating with the Grand Concert in the evening, given by the Bridgend Male Voice Choir - visiting from Wales. On Sunday the main events for the gathering drew over 400 Welsh people from all over Ontario and the neighbouring United States. The two sessions of the hymn singing festival were conducted by Mr. Ray Morris of Ottawa, accom- panied on the organ by Mr. Gwyndof Roberts of Utica, New York. Congratulations to Joel and Julie Van Camp and family on the birth of Jesse Richard born on Saturday, April 20. The Belgrave Community Club organized a bus trip to the Roy Thompson Hall in Toronto where they enjoyed the show Stars of the Lawrence Welk Show. Supper was enjoyed at the Town and Country Restaurant. It was enjoyed by the 44 seniors who went. ._ Michael and Kelly Galbraith of Whitby were weekend guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Campbell and Heather. Darryl Jardin was home from Sir Sandford Fleming College in Lindsay and spent a couple of Jesse Davidson of London, "Jesse's Journey", as special guests. This is to be held at EWPS on Tuesday, May 21 at 8 p.m. with everyone from the community most welcome to attend. Isabel Campbell is the convenor for this special program. President, Audrey Fenton closed the meeting and thanked all who served this past year. She promised a rewarding informative year ahead for the WI members. weeks with his parents Harold and Nancy Jardin. Celebrating Darryl's 20th birthday at the Jardin home were Tom and Ruth Jardin, Blyth and Mike Jardin and friend, Debbie Thomas. Mike and Kelly Galbraith of Whitby also visited at the same home. On Saturday, April 27 visiting at the home of Beth Procter were Mr. and Mrs. Howard Zettler, Sherry, Amanda, Alicia, RR 4, Walkerton. Visiting at the same home on Sunday were Mr. and Mrs. Philip Stopforth and Alexandrea of Oakville and Mrs. Larry Mayberry of Londesboro. Everyone enjoyed pictures of Marjorie and Philip and Alexandrea's recent trip to England. Florence McArter, Don McNall, Charles Cook, Ruth King, Allan Dunbar and friend have returned from a very enjoyable holiday in Branson, Missouri. Craig Marks celebrated his 13th birthday at his home on Friday, April 26. Celebrating with him were brothers, Brian and T.J., his parents Murray and Donna, Travis Campbell, Myron Hussey, Justin Campbell, Derek Marks, Tyler Fenton, Chad Cook, Garrett Knight and Jason Fear. The youths enjoyed bowling as well as other games. Happy birthday to Craig from relatives and friends. The Grade 8s cancelled their car wash due to the weather. It will be rescheduled at a later date. Friends and neighbours wish Justin Arkell a speedy recovery. Justin was hit by a car while riding his bicycle last Saturday, April 27.
