THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 24, 1996 Strut accomplishes work of two predecessors The shock absorbers are there to absorb shock, right? Seems obvious. Actually, it's the springs in your suspension system that absorb the shocks from bumps on the road. The shock absorbers act as dampers to stop the car from bouncing. And what is a MacPherson strut, anyway? In the 1980s, while cars were getting smaller, lighter, and more fuel efficient, there was less and less room for the traditional short and long arm (SLA) suspension systems, especially with the increasing number of front wheel drive cars. The MacPherson strut is a single integrated unit that incorporates both a shock absorber and a coil spring. It is the most common front end suspension. Most people think of their suspension system, if they think about it at all, as a way of providing a smooth ride over a bumpy road. In fact, that's only half the story, and probably the less important half. Suspension systems are engineered into a car. Their main purpose is to keep all four wheels on the road, with an even distribution of weight. The objective is steering and ride control. Without that control, your car would roll from side to side on cornering, would be all over the place on bumpy roads, and would lose braking and steering control. When we say suspension system, we mean "system". All the parts work together with each other and with the steering and braking systems of your vehicle. If the suspension system is worn, it could cost you plenty in seemingly unrelated repairs: • tires • steering linkage • springs • ball joints • constant velocity (CV) joints • underbody parts Now that you're concerned about your suspension, how do you know without putting your car on the hoist and asking an expert? • The first thing you should do is put your car on a hoist and ask an expert. They call that "preventive maintenance", or as the old • bottoming out with a thump on a commercial used to say, "You can pay me (a little) now, or pay me (much more) later." Having said that, there are some things to watch for in your everyday driving: • excessive roll or sway on turns • front end dives on braking • rear end sags on acceleration • bouncing or chattering on bumpy roads or washboard Clean filter helps wheezing We all need air to live, work, and An engine that burns "too rich" play, and our cars are no exception. (i.e. too much fuel and too little air) For every litre of gasoline that your will ;develop some very expensive car burns, it needs up to 9,000 litres problems down the road. Engines of air. Every molecule of that air cost thousands of dollars to replace, passes through your air filter. And air filters only $5 - $10. Not a hard if that filter gets clogged with dust choice, really. and grit, your car will begin to get that asthmatic feeling — it just can't get enough air. Air filters are easy to check, and easy to change. They are housed in a box, usually at the front of the engine, which you can open by unfastening a few screws or wing nuts. Pull out the air filter and hold it up to the light or shine a bright "trouble" light through it. If you can't see much light through the filter, it's a good bet that the engine can't breathe properly and you're losing power and fuel economy. road handling. See your local suspension professionals for the best advice. If you plan to tow boats or trailers, don't be afraid to upgrade. Replacement systems are available with air adjustments, so that you can vary the stiffness of the suspension when you're towing, and keep your headlights (and your wheels) on the road. bump Or try this simple test. Walk around your car, and push down sharply on each corner. Does it rebound smoothly, or does it bounce two or three times? If it bounces, your shocks and struts probably need replacement. Car Care Canada recommends replacement in pairs to maintain There are other filters in your engine, too. There is a gas filter to catch any impurities in the fuel or any sedimentation that develops. There's a PCV, or Positive Crankcase Ventilation, filter which keeps dirt out of the crankcase. And there's the oil filter to keep your oil clean; All need regular maintenance. With regular maintenance, your car will run better, smoother, and longer. And what you spend on filters, you'll save on gasoline. Wheeler Auto Glass Div. of Wheeler Bus Lines Inc.
