MS FACT #1 Canada has one of the highest rates of multiple sclerosis in the world. Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada 1-800-268-7582 Many Brussels residents who still owed frontage charges for the installation of sewers took advan- tage of an opportunity to pay them off and save long-term interest charges. At the April 1 meeting of coun- cil, Clerk-Treasurer Donna White said nearly $90,000 had been received in payments by residents. It will mean that only $110,000 is left to be financed, she said. The village is looking at alternative financing of this amount to see if it can get a better deal than with the Ontario government's Clean Water Agency (OCWA). It has until the end of April to negotiate a new deal with OCWA. *** The village has agreed to a new fire agreement with Morris Twp. The agreement would see Brussels responsible for all fires in areas of the township adjacent to the village where there are fire hydrants. The township could pay $1,200 a year for support and maintenance of the Brussels department in place of a $100 a month purchasing of fire protection now. It will also pay $300 a month. While the money is the same, the change in wording of the agreement will allow the town- ship to use the Mutual Fire Aid agreement when more than one department is needed at a fire. *** So far 117 dog tags have been sold in the village. Records show there should be another eight dogs that haven't been licenced. The bylaw enforcement officer will be visiting dog owners to collect the licence fee. *** The village and the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority will explore ways to replace the bath- room at the Brussels Conservation Area with a building that is more vandal-proof. The wooden building has been burned several times by vandals. "It's rather sad what's Anyone interested in T--Ball Children 5 years & under Call John at 887-9865 after 7:00 p.m. going on," said MVCA representa- tive Bruce McCall who was at the meeting. "There's not much sense building something if they're going to burn it down." *** A grant of $250 was made to the Brussels Agricultural Society. The Belgrave, Blyth and Brussels School Fair receives $100. *** The tender of Ideal Supply at just over $2,500 for 20 high-pressure sodium street lights for the south end of main street was accepted. • Keep door, patio and window screens in good repair, particularly at the cottage where interior lights will reel in flying insects from miles away.
