Without a doubt the week's best new release is To Die For ****
(Columbia/Tristar), a dandy black comedy/drama about a cable tv
weatherwoman who will do anything to be a TV personality even if it
requires having her loving husband (Matt Dillon) murdered. Nicole
Kidman is simply perfect as the narcissistic young woman and Buck
Henry's smart script is turned into classic film noir by director Gus Van
Sant. Highly recommended! (Rated 14A)
A couple of years ago a highly enjoyable low budget thriller called
Tremors did reasonable business at the box-office and even better on
home video. Reminiscent of those classic giant creatures run amok films
so popular in the 1950s, the film's wonky charm and exciting thrills
demanded a sequel which shows up as a direct to video release this week.
Tremors 2: Aftershocks *** (MCA/Universal) turns out to be just as
much fun as the original with those giant underground worms back again
this time to terrorize a remote Mexican oil field. Kevin Bacon who co-
starred in the original has gone on to bigger film roles but returning are
character actor Fred Ward and TV's Michael Gross along with Helen
Shaver and Christopher Gartin. Very enjoyable especially if you like this
kind of movie. (Rated PG)
Among the other new and unpreviewed releases is The Innocent
(Alliance) a cold war thriller starring Anthony Hopkins, Isabella
Rossellini and Campbell Scott. (Rated R)
The critically acclaimed Persuasion (Malofilm) is yet another new film
based on the works of Jane Austen. This one tells of a couple's second
chance at love and was produced by England's Royal Shakespeare
Company. (Rated PG)
In the classic movie department is a newly remastered version of Sunset
Boulevard **** (Paramount - $19.95 or less) director Billy Wilder's acid
drama about a faded silent film star (Gloria Swanson) and the down on his
luck writer (William Holden) who uses her to get ahead.
Also in the cast are Erich Von Stroheim, Cecil B. DeMille, Buster
Keaton and many others. Outstanding! (Rated PG)

Grade 3 students say CAT tests hard
By Betty BoneId and
Amanda van Beek
The Grade 3 class had C CAT
tests on Monday and Tuesday. We
were talking to four Grade 3
students and here's what they had
to say.
Brent Wheeler said "Most
questions were hard, and some
were easy. I think it was really fun
and interesting, I guess that I
gained some very interesting
information."
Candice McLellan said, "Some
questions on the test seemed to be
really easy and some of the
questions were really hard. I'm sure
that I had learned something. Sure
it was long, but it was still fun."
Laurin Hoegy says, "The test was'
long and boring but I guess it was
fun. During this test I learned new
stuff."
Tyler Jutzi said, "I think that this
test was really easy. I believe that I
didn't learn much because I knew
almost everything that wasaon the
test."
All of the Grade 3s would like to
thank Mrs. Barnes for all the work
that she has done on giving them
their C CAT tests.
The first half of the Grade 7/8
class went to Janna Speers to learn
how to cook Chinese food. Cody
Nichol said, "We learned how to
cook egg foo young, stir fry, soup,
April 22 marks the beginning of
Earth Week, and thus fitting that
the topic of the Huron County
Elementary Teachers' Professional
Development Day, on April 26 be
entitled "Reach Out: Bringing The
World to Your Classroom". This
learning day for teachers will be
held at F. E. Madill Secondary
School in Wingham, with some
afternoon computer or environmen-
tal sessions to take place at the
Learning Resource Centre,
Goderich District Collegiate
Institute, Zurich Public School and
Grey Central School.
The ongoing Global Education
Committee of the Huron County
Board of Education has been
operating for two years and even
publishes its own newsletter. It has
had major input into the Profes-
sional Development activities this
year, and members are among the
46 presenters, who will be giving
the teachers an eye-opening and
thought-provoking global perspec-
tive on education.
Topics for the day include human
rights, the environment, multi-
culturalism and anti-racism, and
technology - all of which have
global implications. Speakers and
presenters include teachers,
members of the business and agri-
cultural community, people from
environmental, natural resources
and social service agencies. Groups
such as Project Overseas, the Food
Grains Bank, Red Cross, the
Armed Forces, exchange groups,
Children from Chernobyl and
rice and tea. It was a different
experience for me."
Tyler Bragg said, "I think it was
fun learning how to cook Chinese
food. I learned that Chinese people
drink tea with no sugar. The soup
was good. I can't eat with
chopsticks."
The kindergarten class had really
got into the spirit of Easter. They
have already coloured Easter eggs,
made big paper eggs, made Easter
baskets, and stand up Easter
bunnies- and gone on an Easter egg
hunt.
They are doing a safe program to
teach the children about how to
deal with abuse at a young age
which is good so that when they are
older they will know what to do
about it. They are also teaching
them not to talk to strangers.
The winners of The Ark poster
contest were Nicole White, first
and Nicki Mason, second.
Amnesty International will also
showcase programs and present
storefront activities.
Peter Butler, the keynote speaker,
will address the topic "This is
Chaos! - making sense of it and
thriving on it!" He will briefly
reflect on issues that are affecting
teachers and give some hints on
survival, on framing what's
important to the profession, and on
creating initiatives and oppor-
tunities to produce a renewed
commitment to the profession in
the future.
Wilhelmina Laurie,. president of
the Huron Women Teachers
- Federation says, "At this turning
point in our history, we need to
- take a great leap forward to fix the
planet and its problems. The most
essential decision that any
individual, social grouping, religion
or government can now make is to
begin to think of every aspect of
life from a global perspective.
Every person on our earth must
take social responsibility for it and
for our fellow human beings. A
creative challenge is being issued
to all sensitive people on this planet
to link the fundamentals of
education to the survival of the
planet."
Parents and community members
are invited to attend any or some of
the workshops, storefronts or
resource fair by registering at F. E.
Madill at 8:30 on the professional
activity day.
The Grade 7-8 class is enlarging
cartoon characters using the grid
method. At this point in time we
are getting good results.
We would like to congratulate
Cassie Bootzin and Marty Goetz
for winning in the safety poster
contest.
