Spring flowers decorate Blyth United
Easter Day was celebrated at
Blyth United 'Church this past
Sunday with a large congregation
in attendance. The many beautiful
hydrangea plants, Easter lilies,
tulips and daffodils decorating the
sanctuary were placed in memory
of loved ones. Rey. Steve Huntley,
minister, conducted the service.
Greeting the many worshippers
were Hary and Deanna Snell and
ushers were the Sanderson family,
Elmer and Marie, Jonathan,
Anthony and Stephanie. Phyllis
Boak, organist and Shirley Vincent,
pianist, played a beautiful musical
prelude while the congregation was
being seated.
Rev. Huntley opened with Call to
Worship, then led the congregation
in singing introit, The Celebration
Song accompanying on guitar. This
was followed by the opening hymn
Jesus Christ it Risen Today.
Following the children's hymn,
Lord This Day Thy Children Meet,
A Good Friday service was held
at Brussels Mennonite Fellowship
on the evening of April 5. Com-
munion was served during the
service. Lucy Hesse and Kathy
Procter looked after the music and
Thelma Steinman was the worship
leader. The youth were in charge of
a Sunrise Service, Easter Sunday,
followed by a light breakfast, be-
fore the regular service. Sue Sieger,
Michelle Lichty, and Darlene
Hemingway sang Feel the Nails.
Christine Knorr gave a children's
story, and Aaron Cardiff gave the
Brussels UC
to dedicate
new organ
Brussels United Church is
dedicating a new church organ at
its 11 a.m. worship service on April
14.
The instrument is donated in
loving memory of Barbara J.
McCutcheon, by her husband,
George and daughters, Vonne and
Pauline.
Mrs. McCutcheon was a faithful
member and active worker in
Brussels United Church for 47
years from 1947 - 1994. She sang
in the choir and taught Sunday
School. She convened catering for
United Church Women, was the
first woman elected to the
Committee of Stewards and was
recording secretary of the official
board for many years.
Rev. Cam McMillan said, her
cheerful disposition, sharp wit,
sense of humour, deep interest in
people and willingness to help and
serve others brightened up the lives
of all who knew her. "She loved
music. It is fitting that she be
remembered through music each
time this organ is played."
The dedication service will
feature a lot of special music and
will be followed by a lunch catered
by United Church Women.
Rev. Huntley's message to them
was about eggs. He told them that
Easter eggs are very appropriate as
out of them, when hatched, come
chicks, baby robins, etc. Easter
means new life and hope to
everyone.
He gave each child a balloon
with the words, 'Jesus Christ is
Risen Today'.
Rev. Huntley delivered an
inspiring Easter sermon entitled,
"Risen With Christ!" "Why did
Jesus have to die?" he asked.
Without crucifixion there would
be no resurrection and without
Good Friday there would be no
Easter. Easter means experiencing
the power of Jesus, he said,
changing a great tragedy into a new
beginning. He noted a sign located
outside a local business which
reads, "Easter Season - where
nature and man are reborn!"
In closing Rev. Huntley said, "no
matter what you have lost, be it a
meditation.
Several members of the youth
group participated in skits.
Easter Sunday, Rod Steinman
was the worship leader and Elwin
Garland gave the message. He
spoke on gifts. We take risks in
giving, he said. "Sometimes gifts
are given for the wrong motives.
We want others to be indebted to
us, or we want to be recognized,
sometimes when we give gifts.
Sometimes the gifts are actually for
our own good, not for others. We
need to examine our motives. Do
we give to make others happy, or to

Matthew 28: 1-10.
Following the sermon, the choir
rendered an anthem, Easter Joys
which was followed by the hymn,
Christ the Lord is Risen Today.

get self satisfaction?"
Sometimes gifts are given
conditionally, "I'll love you if you
do the right things." Giving gifts
can be a method of control, Mr.
Garland said. Gift giving should be
an act of love.
One of the greatest gifts is the
trust one friend has for another, the
trust of giving one's innermost
thoughts. God made us in his
image; therefore, if we reject others
we also reject God. The love of
God cannot be separated from the
love of another person. The true
significance of a gift comes from
the love of both the giver and the
receiver. God pours out gifts to His
created people, even today. Easter
tells us that God gave completely
of himself through the gift of His
Son. God gives the greatest gift
possible — the choice to enter into
eternity. God's command to us is to
love one another."
Next Sunday, Sandy McEachem
will bring the message.
