The toll free number — 1-800-263-6750 — is staffed by professionals and specially trained volunteers who understand how confusing the subject of cancer can be. This free service is funded jointly by the Canadian Cancer Society, Ontario Division and the Ontario Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation. Patient Services: The Canadian Cancer Society knows about the special needs of people living with cancer and has developed several programs to help meet those needs. To experience cancer is to come face-to-face with the unknown. A diagnosis of cancer can result in fear, anger and denial, and often forces us to confront challenges unlike any we have ever know. Talking to someone who has dealt with cancer can help sort out many of the questions and concerns associated with the disease. Talking to someone who has "been there" can provide that extra emotional support when it is needed most. Patient Services volunteers in your community provide practical- assistance to cancer patients and their families through our transportation program, short- term financial assistance with the cost of some items, and emotional support through difficult times. Canadian Cancer Society volunteers also provide comfort, support and information to cancer patients and their families in Regional Cancer Centres, Follow-Up Clinics and Lodges in your community. The Lodges, built with Canadian Cancer Society funds, are operated by local Cancer Centres. These Cancer Centres across Ontario are funded by the Ontario Government. Where Our Money Comes From The Canadian Cancer Society is totally supported by public donations. Our programs receive no government aid and we are not part of The United Way. The annual April campaign provides our main source of funding. Every year, thousands of Society volunteers knock on doors across Ontario asking for donations.
