Swans down
The Westfield Road property of Ray Hallahan became a landing strip last week as tundra
swans chose his field for a layover. The graceful beauties were almost camouflaged by the
weather conditions and patches of leftover snow in the ground, but their numbers made it
impossible to miss them.

Rev. Peter Scott, London was
guest minister for Easter Sunday
services at Calvin-Brick and
Belgrave United Churches. George
Inglis welcomed the Belgrave
congregation as they arrived for the
service.
The musical prelude of several
Easter selections was played by the
organist, Elizabeth Procter with
Joanne Robinson on the piano.
Following the Call to Worship,
and Prayer of Approach, the
congregation sang Welcome Happy
Morning, then joined in the Prayer
of Confession.
The Sonshine Singers, under the
leadership of Lila Procter, sang two
numbers, Christ the Lord is Risen
Today and A, B, C, D, E, F, G,
with the junior choir. Joanne
Robinson accompanied at the
piano.
For the children's story, Rev.
Scott told the story of "The Three
Trees". As each tree grew on the
hillside, they each had wishes of
what they wanted to be. One
wanted to be used in a palace, one
on a ship that sailed the seas, and
the smallest one wanted to just
point the way to heaven.
The first one ended up in a barn
that Jesus was born in. The second
ended up as a fishing boat - the one
in which James and John took
Jesus out on the Sea of Galilee,
when he calmed the water. The
third was cut up into two pieces,
which became the cross that Jesus
was crucified on.
All their wishes had been
granted but maybe not in the way
The Evening Unit of the UCW
met on Tuesday, April 2 at the
home of Ruth Johnston. Seventeen
members were present.
Barbara Anderson welcomed
everyone and opened the meeting
with a poem "April". Louise
Bosman and Thelma Pletch
conducted the worship service.

they expected, Rev. Scott said.
The senior choir then sang the
anthem The Easter Song.
The scripture lessons from Acts,
Colossians, and Matthew were all
translated into story form, which
connected all three together as the
Easter story.
The congregation sang the hymn
Jesus Christ is Risen Today.
As the congregation hadn't
observed Good Friday with a
special service, Rev. Scott
explained how the joy of Easter
morning isn't the same without first
experiencing the sorrow of Good
Friday. His sermon, also told in
parable form, gave examples of
how Jesus carries all burdens and
troubles and by his resurrection
gave the gift of life.
The offering was received by
John Nixon and Ross Higgins, with
Easter music by Elizabeth Procter
at the organ and Joanne Robinson
at the piano.
Following the prayers of the
people, the congregation sang the
hymns The Day of Resurrection,
followed by Rev. Scott
pronouncing the benediction.
The congregation were reminded
that Elly VanBergen has started her
weekend supply with the pastoral
charge and will be available for
visiting on Thursdays. She will be
assisting Rev. Mary Jane Hobden
on Sunday, April 14 with infant
baptism and communion.
Knox Church's annual pancake
supper will be Wednesday, April
10 from 5 - 7 p.m. in the church
basement. Everyone is welcome.
Stand were sung.
The scripture from John 20 was
read by Thelma Pletch and a
meditation was given by Louise
Bosman. The offering was received
and dedicated, then the meeting
was closed with prayer and the
benediction.
During the business period the
roll call was answered by members
telling of their memories of maple
syrup making. The roll call for next
month will be an item of food for
the "North Huron Community Food
Share".
Ida Proctet introduced the guest,
Mary Lou Johnston, who told of
her experiences in Jamaica this past
winter.
Lunch was served by Freda
Johnston and Laura Johnston.

Recently a group of high school
students got together from Bel-
grave, Wingham and Gorrie and
spent their first week of March
break in Varadero, Cuba. It was
definitely a week to remember.The
weather was perfect, which made it
all the better. Most days were
enjoyed by the poolside taking in _
the sun and activities put on by the
entertainment staff. By night, there
was also a program provided of
which many of the students in the
group participated.
Then it was off to the disco
where they discovered quite a
culture shock.
Speaking of culture, the language
was Spanish, living conditions
were by no means glamorous and
the food took some getting used to.
All in all, it was a great trip and a
fantastic experience.
A special thanks to Trevor Beck,
who took it upon himself to
organize the trip. His time and
effort was greatly appreciated by
everyone. Thanks Trevor!
