Festival Box Office opens Entertainment A voice from the east Renowned Canadian singer Rita MacNeil enthralled audiences in Blyth, March 23, when she filled Memorial Hall for two shows. MacNeil, beginning her cross-province tour to promote her latest release Porch Songs, continues her concerts through April then travels west in the fall. her raised in this wacky and mysterious adventure that has more twists than a Chubby Checker tune. Watch for special guest appearances by local favourites Gary Haist (Clinton), Rob Bundy (Goderich), Floyd Herman (Goderich), Kira Stuckey (Wingham), Anne Elliott (Blyth), Duncan McGregor (Blyth), Carol Oriold (Wroxetcr), and The Nasty Habits (Blyth). Stage managed by Fran Cook, Mary Lou, Mary Lou! will also feature great live music from the 50s by Arlene Dambrough, Kim Souch and Travis Teed. The du Maurier Arts Council is awarding grants to organizations presenting performances that are innovative or designed to develop new audiences. This ongoing support of the arts in Canada has helped in the development of internationally acclaimed programs and festivals, assisted Canadian arts organizations in reaching audiences 'n all parts of the county and given You'll sing, you'll dance, you'll laugh until your sides ache! Come Back to the Gym, Mary Lou, Mary Lou! on May 3 and 4 at the Blyth Memorial Community Hall. Written by Rob Bundy, with music arranged by Arlene Dambrough, Mary Lou, Mary Lou! is the story of prom queen, Mary Lou Connor, who disappeared from the 1956 Blyth High School dance. Now it's 40 years later and the graduates of Blyth High have gathered together for a school reunion. Speculation and rumours still abound. Did Mary Lou run away? Was she hiding some terrible secret? Will Mary Lou ever come home? These questions and more will be The Blyth Festival (Blyth Centre for the Arts) has been awarded a cash grant in 1996 from the du Maurier Arts Council, Canada's largest single private-sector source of arts funding. This group is among 49 Ontario and 183 arts organizations from across Canada selected as this year's grant recipients. In 1996 du Maurier Arts Council endowments touch every region in the country. Arts organizations from the Northwest Territories, the Yukon and every province are represented. Group bookings have been brisk and theatre-goers are encouraged to order their tickets early to avoid disappointment. An exciting line-up of three world preinieres and a fourth play new to the area will cover all the elements on the main stage from music and love to laughter and drama. The Festival's gala opening is scheduled for June 21, with a performance of Barndance Live!, a collective directed by Paul Thompson. This play celebrates the great touring radio show, The CKNX Barn Dance. Ma Belle Mabel, a moving love story by Cindy Cowan, Villa Eden, a zany comedy by Colleen Curran, and Fireworks, a warm family drama by Gordon Portman, round out the season. Reunion. The fun-filled evening begins with a traditional 50s "comfort food" dinner at 6 p.m. followed by the performance at 8 p.m. Sponsored by Ideal Supply Co., the mystery dinner/theatre packages are $25 each (all inclu- sive). Located in the "link" between the administration offices and Blyth Memorial Community Hall, the Box Office is open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. until May 24. Starting May 27, the Box Office will also be open Saturdays until 5 p.m. From June 17 to Aug. 31, the Box Office is open Monday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. (except for non-performance days when it closes at 5 p.m.). The $50 Adventure Pack allows you to exchange one coupon for each of the Festival's four 1996 main stage productions.
