Special week highlights
the Blyth Scouting season
•
By John Schedler
Heading this week's list of new releases is Last of the Dogmen ***1/12
(HBO), a fine drama about a tracker (Tom Berenger) and an
anthropologist (Barbara Hershey), who discover an undiscovered tribe of
Cheyenne Indians in the Montana wilderness. Writer and director Tab
Murray sure proves tenacity pays. He pitched this project for 15 years to
the Hollywood big wigs until he finally found the funding. Unfortunately
the film was a bust at the box office, but now that it's on home video be
sure to check it out. Highly recommended! (Rated PG)
Also recommended is Theremin: An Electronic Odyssey ***(Orion) a
fascinating documentary about the Russian inventor who pioneered
electronic music during the 1930s before he was kidnapped back to the
Soviet Union by KGB agents. His gizmo, which produced an eerie sound,
was used in the films Lost Weekend, Spellbound and the Red House by
Oscar winning composer Miklos Rosza, who made it the official
Hollywood mouthpiece of mental disorders during the 1940s. In the 1950s
that new wave of science-fiction films made the Theremin their own,
starting with the classic The Day the Earth Stood Still and in the 60s
Beach Boy Brian Wilson used it on Good Vibrations. (Unrated)
Among the week's other new releases you will find, Seven (Alliance),
the critically acclaimed thriller starring Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt as
two cops on the trail of a brutal serial killer. (Rated R)
The romantic comedy Kicking and Screaming (Malofilm) focuses its
attention on four 22-year-olds as they try to come to grips with life after
college. (Rated 14A)
Mallrats (MCA/Universal) is director Kevin Smith's follow up to
Clerks, an alleged comedy about hanging out at the mall. (Rated R - for
lots of rough language)
In the family film Magic in the Water (Malofilm) Mark Harmon plays a
busy father who discovers his inner child when he is swallowed by a lake
monster. (Rated G)
The folks at Disney are offering the The Many Adventures of Winnie
The Pooh **** (Disney - $28.95 or less) a delightful and charming movie
well worth adding to your home library. (Rated G - of coursC).
Fans of the popular TV series will want to check out The X-Files (Fox -
$16.95 or less) three tapes each featuring two uncut episodes. (Unrated)
Quentin Tarantino's acclaimed Pulp Fiction ***1/2 (Alliance) is now
available for under $20 in both pan and scan and, for the first time, a much
superior widescrecn letterbox version with 10 additional minutes of
footage. (Rated R)

Company looking for students
to paint the town this summer
By Janice Becker
With just a few snow drifts
remaining, stubbornly resisting to
melt and rain showers forecast, Stu-
dent Works Painting co-ordinator
Chuck McLennan is hitting the
streets to recruit summer employ-
ees.
McLennan is looking for six to
eight high school, college or uni-
versity students wanting to work on
painting teams beginning in May.
"Though we do a lot of exterior
painting, we also do interiors," says
McLennan. The teams arc available
for all types of jobs ranging from
residential to commercial such as
Harry Nigh from Welcome Inn in
Hamilton brought the message to
Brussels Mennonite Fellowship on
March 25. Mr. Nigh lived with an
incurable liver disease for 16 years.
He then was the recipient of a new
healthy liver.
He made an analogy of his
experiences with salvation. People
live with sin, as he lived with a
diseased organ. All he brought to
his physical healing was his disease
and his willingness to sign the
consent form for surgery. All
people take to salvation (or
spiritual healing) is their sin and
their willingness to confess and
surrender themselves to Christ.
the Blyth Post Office, Bedford
Arms, Goderich, Kinloss Garage,
McBurncy Funeral Home, Wing-
ham and Kentucky Fried Chicken,
Goderich, all past clients.
Though painting experience is
preferred, McLennan says full
training is provided. The team will
cover the territory from Brussels to
Amberly and Bayficli to Scaforth.
Anyone interested in working
with Student Works Painting or
wishing to book that summer home
refresher may call McLennan any-
time at 519-524-4858 or 1-800-
803-1100. Estimates are given
mainly on weekends, at present.
Salvation is completely a gift from
God; it is not something they can
do for themselves. People can only
be willing to turn their lives over to
God.
Lloyd Koch was the worship
leader and the song leader for the
service. Anne Hemingway played
the piano and Kristi Procter played
for the offertory.
The youth had returned safely
from the service ventures in Hamil-
ton, Montreal and Winnipeg. They
gathered at Pardys on Sunday
evening for supper and a sharing
experience. They will share with
the entire congregation at the
service next Sunday, March 31.
With winter just about over, the
first six months of the-Scouting
year have been highlighted by
Scout-Guide week. All activities
for the week are dedicated to the
celebration of the birthdays of Lord
Baden-Powell, the founder of
Scouting around the world, and his
wife, Lady Baden-Powell, who
initiated Guiding.
On Feb. 18 all sections of both
Guiding and Scouting participated
in the morning service of the Blyth
United Church.
On Wednesday, Feb. 21 over 200
parents, participants, family mem-
bers, and leaders gathered at the
Blyth arena for a delicious potluck
meal, skits and presentations.
Citizenship plaques were
presented by 1st Blyth Scouting to
the Blyth Legion and to the Blyth
Lions Club in appreciation of their
many years of sponsor support to
Scouting in Blyth. Erica Clark was
also presented with two prestigious
awards in recognition of earning
the silver level of the Duke of
Edinburgh Award. She is currently
working on the gold level.
During the week a display was
set up in the window of Webster's
depicting the uniforms, and some
of the activities, crafts and badges
associated with both Scouting and
Guiding. Also on display was the
collection of crests that Chris Knox
has acquired from local camping
events, Canadian Jamboree '93 in
Kananaskis, Alberta, and World
Jamboree '95 in Holland.
On March 7 the Rover crew
prepared and served a delicious
chili supper at the Blyth arena. As a
newly formed section of Blyth
Scouting, and the only Rover crew
in Huron District, they are raising
funds in order to buy the equipment
necessary to participate in camping
and canoeing excursions during the
spring and summer months.
During the March break leaders
for 1st Blyth Scouting will be
planning the program for the
remaining three months of the
regular season. Snowshoes and
