Man pleads guilty to several charges A Clinton man is spending some time in jail after pleading guilty to several charges at March 20's provincial court in Wingham. Mark Keddy was charged with two counts of defrauding the bank, cruelty to animals, breach of proba- tion and assault causing bodily harm. The second bank fraud had been committed at the CIBC branch in A man responsible for the shoot- ing of his friend in a hunting acci- dent in Morris Twp. last October appeared before Judge Garry Hunter in Wingham's provincial court March 20 on a charge of care- less use of a firearm. Jose Ramao of London and the victim were grouse hunting on Conc. 2, Oct. 19. According to Crown Attorney MacEwen Egener the pair were walking down a ravine when the gun accidentally discharged. The pellets struck the victim in his head and back. The pellets didn't penetrate the scalp, though some did lodge in the back close to the spine, Egener said. During the investigation police Brussels on Feb. 12, when, accord- ing to Crown Attorney MacEwen Egener, the accused made three separate deposits, totalling $1,000, into an account he had opened in Hensall. He then withdrew $168.04. It was later discovered that the deposit envelopes were empty. Kcddy only once disagreed with discovered that Ramao had not had the safety device engaged while walking. Defense Attorney Bob Shepherd says Ramao and the victim both have their FACs and arc licensed. His client believed the safety was engaged. The victim's injuries were origi- nally believed to be life-threaten- ing, however he was in court with the accused and though he is still taking therapy, appears to have recovered, Shepherd said. Noting his client's remorse, Shep- herd said a guilty plea had not been made at the first court appearance as the victim had been out of the country. "(My client) felt terrible; the evidence. When it was noted that another had taken part in the assault committed Oct. 20 in Clin- ton, Keddy said the other person had not "laid a hand" on the victim. Keddy's record includes a break, enter and theft from 1993, mischief from June 1993, and young offend- ers charges from 1990 and 1989. Egener asked Judge Garry Hunter to consider a minimum sen- this was not just a co-worker, but a close friend," said Shepherd adding that police had received complete co-operation and had noted in their reports that Ramao's main concern had not been for the trouble he was in but for his friend. "This was truly an accident though perhaps one which could have been avoided with greater caution. There was certainly no intention to do harm," said Shep- herd. Judge Hunter fined him $750 or 35 days. Ramao is prohibited from possessing a firearm for five years. He was given 60 days to turn his guns over to someone with FAC or the police would dispose of them. tence of six months, plus probation and restitution. Keddy was sen- tenced to one month consecutive on the breach charge, 30 days consec- utive for cruelty to animals, 60 days for assault, one month consec- utive for each of the bank frauds A pre-sentence report is being prepared for a Brussels-area man, who pled guilty to two sex charges in Wingham's provincial court last Wednesday. John Thomas Haig, RR5, Brus- sels appeared before Judge Garry Hunter on one charge of invitation to sexual touching and one charge of sexual assault. Both charges involved minors, both males. A Brussels-area man was fined $500 for possession of stolen prop- erty after appearing in Wingham's provincial court, March 20. Dennis Bright, RR 3, Brussels pled guilty to the charge which was laid following a police investiga- tion on Feb. 4. for a total of six months. He has nine months following his release to make restitution, in the amount of $200 to the Royal Bank in Clinton and $168.04 to the CIBC. He was also placed on probation. whose identity is protected through a publication ban. Though his client admitted guilt, defense counsel Mike Donnelly said that Haig had "apparently been drinking and has no recollection" of the second incident which occurred earlier this year. Judge Hunter will hear the pre- sentence report on May 15. According to Crown Attorney Dennis Egcner, Bright had pur- chased a car battery, chemicals, oil, head lamps, automotive fuses and cough drops, valued in total at approximately $220, which had been stolen from several places. Judge Garry Hunter gave Bright 90 days to pay the fine.
