Following the blessing, which was pronounced by Rev. Cathrine Campbell, Dorothy Coultes, WI president, welcomed everyone. She then asked Ada Taylor (the curator for the Tweedsmuir History) to add briefly to the address she had given recently, by providing information on the hotel which had existed opposite the old Queen's Hotel. Apparently it had been owned by a Charles Blakesley, and it housed a butcher's shop and dressmaker's business. The room above the stable was used for concerts, meetings and suppers and the hotel itself was later converted into apartments. Gladys Van Camp, convenor for the meeting, read a number of poems, relating to Spring which were well received. She then introduced the guest speaker, Alan Carr of Brussels, a landscape gardener. He gave a brief outline of the various type of landscaping which are commonly used. In formal gardens, he said, everything is very balanced and symmetrical often with a centre path leading to the front door. Informal gardens, on the other hand, lack symmetry and are allowed to grow more freely as they would in a natural environment. Japanese landscaping places the emphasis on rocks and water, and English style landscaping uses lots of brightly coloured flowers. Trees, both deciduous and evergreens, may also be used in landscaping. The larger trees should be planted approximately 25 feet apart, and since some of the root systems may extend up to 75 feet, they should be planted that distance away from the house to avoid cracking basement walls. Shrubs used in landscaping may have flowers in various colours and leaves with different colours and textures. They should also be planted a little distance from the house to enable them to receive more air, light and moisture. Many varieties of perennials may be used since they bloom at different times of the year and may be left undisturbed permanently. Annuals are also very popular since they add quite a splash of colour during the summer months. Lawns should be raked when the snow melts, to remove old grass and snow mold. Slow release nitrogen fertilizer should be used in mid-April, mid- May and mid-June, with more being applied under trees. Also the grass should not be cut in very hot weather or in drought conditions. Carr then demonstrated how to prune both evergreen and deciduous shrubs by removing all the dead and brown branches. He emphasized the importance of keeping the centre of shrubs and trees clear to encourage new growth. He also mentioned that branches should be pruned fairly close to the trunk. Cutting should also be done on an angle. A brief question and answer period followed after which Mrs. Van Camp thanked the speaker and presented him with a token of appreciation. A book and picture display pertaining to gardening, was also enjoyed by those present. Dorothy Coultes, president and. BEAUTI-TONE Interior Latex Velvet Enamel Dries to a 'washable' eggshell finish.
