Agriculture 1996 Monitors allow easier yield measurements Continued from A-21 applications. This will indicate field sections which will respond to fertilizers and ones which show lit- tle increased yield. University of Guelph research also indicates it is best to vary one component at a time to better deter- mine the resulting yields. Monitors allow easier measure- ments of yields and better crop management. The next step in advance technol- ogy may include the use of global positioning satellite (GPS) equip- ment. This allows each field to be mapped, in great detail, with over- lays of specific yield information and topography. John Deere introduced the GreenStar combine mapping sys- tem recently, a complete precision- farming package. As more farmers utilize precision farming techniques, says Baker, the availability of variable rate equip- ment to make use of the informa- tion obtained, will also improve. Variable rate planters will be avail- able next year while spreaders and sprayers may be two or three years down the road. With a few years of good data gathered from yield monitors and analyzed, farmers will be able to decide if variable rate equipment will solve their problem, says Baker. Other new members of the John Deere family for 1996 inClude equipment for 20 inch corn plant- ing instead of having to retrofit older planters, a new line of utility tractors in the 40 to 60 horsepower range with factory installed cabs, a loader tractor in the 5500 series and a road baler with a wider pickup. Ford also has a new line of trac- tors coming out, which will not be available until fall, however. They, too, have seen an increase in demand for GPS systems, says Neil McGavin of McGavin Farm Equip- ment, Walton. Radford Farm Equipment, Lon- desboro, the dealer for Agco White and Massey equipment, has several new tractors available for this sea- son. In the Massey lineup, the entire line of 6000 and 8000 series trac- tors have been overhauled, says Neil Salverda. The 6000 series, available with two or four-wheel drive, eight- speed transmission and four-speed dynashift comes in a 6150 with 86 pto hp, 6170 and 97 pto hp and the 6180 at 110 pto hp. The 8000 series, with a revamped hydraulics system facilitating a flow of 29 gallons per minute, ranges in size from the 8120 at 130 pto hp to the 8160 with 180 pto hp. The 40 to 60s in the series have the Valmet engine out of Finland, says Salverda. "They are a really reli- able engine. "Agco spent $60 million in research, developing this line of tractors." White has added a smaller mem- ber to the family with the 6045. It has a low profile, good for working in the barn, and less than 50 pto hp. Both lines have developed a new loader system which is quick attaching, self-leveling and has a heavier frame to deal with the round bales, says Salverda. The units are interchangeable with any Agco product. Radfords will also be handling Marliss drills, no-till row cultiva- tors which are very heavy duty and the Bush Hog dealership.
