Yield not only factor to consider

though there appears to be more of
an advantage to NT on clay soil,
Lobb adds.
The yield is not the only factor to
consider when going to a no-till
system, says Lobb.
"As farmers go through the pro-
cess of replacing equipment, the
fact that no-till requires a tractor
only 2/3 the size is a considera-

tion," says Lobb. The largest capac-
ity needed is for hauling wagons,
manure spreader or for blowing
snow.
Though savings may be seen in
the tractor, the drill and planter can
cost 50 per cent more than conven-
tional equipment, but it is heavy,
strong machinery, says Lobb.
With no increased need for fertil-
izer, seed or pesticides, lower costs
for machinery investment, operat-
ing time and labour time and cost,
the greatest savings in NT is found
to be in the fuel cost relative to the
value of the cost produced, says
Lobb.
It is utilization of the entire no-
till system which makes it a suc-
cess, he says.

keep soil from blowing away. Their
roots keep soil in place and protect
the land against wind and water
erosion. They shade and cool the
soil. Their leaves, twigs and trunks
mix with the soil's mineral particles
to add organic matter which affects
the water holding capacity and
nutrient levels of the soil.
Unfortunately while, reforesting
is on the move, there is a long way
to go in rural Ontario. "We are
down to the point that we have
more open land than we can sustain
for the long-term," says Smith.
"We are probably where we have to
move back to forests in Huron
County. There are really not
enough trees here right now. But
individual landowners are realizing
this so the move is back to forest
management. The future will be
different."
