Roberts Van Bergen visits Knox The Fourth Sunday of Lent was observed on Sunday, March 17 in the Knox United Church, Belgrave with Elly Van Bergen as guest speaker. She used as her text the Gospel story in John of the man who was born blind. Her sermon was told in story form and described the reaction of the community to the healing of this man by Jesus. They questioned the healing on a Sabbath, and whose sin had made him blind. The man had been born into darkness and now he is the light of the Lord. "We are all to live as children of light," Van Bergen said. The congregation was welcomed by Cam and Laurie Procter and Kim McArter assisted in the There were 10 tables of euchre in play on Wednesday, March 13 in the Women's Institute Hall. Despite the stormy weather, a good number gathered for worship at the Wingham United Church on the first Sunday of March, when the congregation had the oppor- tunity to hear guest speaker, Rev. John Roberts of Belgrave tell of his call to the ministry 50 years ago. A native of Wales, John mentioned how, as a youth in the 1940s he had been turned down by the military because of extreme nervousness. However, one Sunday in early March of 1946, as he accompanied his mother to his grandmother's house for an evening radio news broadcast, he took her by the arm and said "Ma'am (the Welsh term for mother), I'm going into the ministry!" Despite protests from family members and some hesitation on the part of his local minister, John persisted, received the required education and was duly ordained in October 1955, by the Presbyterian Church of Wales. He and his wife Kay, along with their children, Howard and Alison, emigrated to Canada in 1968. Rev. Roberts served as minister of the Belgrave United Church pastoral charge from that time until his retirement in 1989. Mrs. Roberts taught as a member of the staff of the Blyth Public School. In his message on Sunday, Rev. Roberts stated his conviction that one's call to discipleship is like that which God made to the prophet Isaiah, "Here am I, send me." Later in the service/Ken Wood presented Rev. Roberts with a card and dish garden as a token of congratulations. Many took the opportunity to speak with the Roberts' at a coffee Continued on page 21 40 play games of euchre Atoms capture B title Pastor goes on study leave 1- HURON TRAINING AND LABOUR COALITION SPRING MEETING March 29th, 1996 8:30 am to 3:30 pm Benmiller Inn Groups and Businesses interested in community and labour market issues are invited to attend.
