The Citizen, 1996-03-06, Page 23Compiled by Patty Banks Phone 887-6156 Thanks Marjory Humphries, left, president of the Walton WI presents Pat Nolan, treasurer of the Walton Hall Board with a cheque of $500 to be used towards the purchase of a replacement for the old furnace in the Hall basement (pictured in the background). The money was raised through dinners and other WI events. Theme Thursday wraps up Thursday was the windup for Theme Thursday at Walton P.S. The students assembled into the activity room where the various groups showed what they had been working on. In Mrs. Bennett's flight program they had a timed fly-off contest. They had been working on designing baskets that could be used in flight. Some learned that the material used was too heavy and so it was back to the drawing board. With their baskets completed and with helium balloons attached, the basket that hit the ceiling first was the winner. Winners of this event were Marcie McClure, Nicholas Giller, Tyler Elligsen, Laura Bowers and Nicole Williamson. Their craft reached the ceiling in 1.73 seconds. Susan Elston's quilting group showed off some of their very colourful quilt blocks made from wallpaper. Mrs. Vivian's room had been the place to build houses of the three pigs. On this day Mrs. Vivian brought in the Big, Bad Wolf to see which of the three houses would come crashing down. The wolf (a large fan) could only blow the roof off one. Mrs. Scott's group had made musical instruments from various, everyday materials (junk) and some played their instruments while the others sang, Old Dan Tucker. Mrs. Vandendool's group had been working on paper folding (origami) and using this art they told these three stories to everyone present - Dick Whittington's Cat, Have You See Birds? and The Frog Prince. The Grade 2s are working on their 3 R's - reduce, reuse and recycle. They were amazed to learn that it takes 400 years for plastic to break down and that glass and styrofoam never breaks down. The Grade 3s, in studying weather signs, came up with a few sayings such as, birds flying low will bring snow or winter fog will kill a dog. If anyone in the community has any other weather sayings, the class would love to hear from you. They also predicted that March came in like a lion and it will go out like a lamb. Their predictions Continued on page 27 People The community congratulate Monique and Don Baan on the birth of their son, Ryan. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 6,1996 PAGE 23. Margaret McInroy hosts WI meeting Twelve members of Walton Women's Institute met at Margaret Mclnroy's new home near Blyth. The roll call, "What does the WI do for you and what do you do for the WI?" was an introduction to the topic. Margaret was in charge of the topic and she noted many of the answers referred to the advantages of being a WI member and obligations fulfilled in the past. She invited members to participate now and avail themselves of opportunities for personal development. The Mary Stewart Collect is a prayer written for club women and used by Women's Institute branches widely. This code of conduct for club women was explained and recommended as a suitable standard for women's organizations. During the business part of the meeting, members voted to donate to the Hall Board toward the purchase of a furnace, for the maintenance of the Erland Lee Home museum and the Adelaide Hoodless Home Museum (both involved in the formation of WI) and the Federated Women's Institute of Ontario (FWIO) headquarter's building. Plans were made to cater to meals on March 6, April 8, July 9, Aug. 9, and Oct. 26. A tentative slate of officers was drawn up for the annual meeting to be held on April 17, following a potluck meal. The next meeting will be held at the Walton Hall on March 20 with Marion Godkin, convenor of Education, in charge. Community members are invited to bring favourite and special quilts for photographing for the Tweedsmuir History record. The Huron-Perth WI education committee has planned workshops to which all women are welcome to attend. Topics are herbs, planting a planter or window box, ribbon embroidery or needle tatting. There is a $15 registration fee and materials for needlework. For further details contact Margaret McInroy at 523-9634!
