Pastor returns from Domincan Republic By Janice Becker The congregation and pastor of the Missionary Church in Auburn have been very busy in recent weeks. Pastor Jim Came, along with 16- year-old grandson David Camplin of Thornbury and parish member Stratford-Huron Presbyterial of the Women's Missionary Society held its annual meeting in St. Andrew's Church, Stratford on Feb. 23. The theme for the day was Partners in Hope. President, Jean Edmunds, Mitchell, gave the call to worship and Gordon Auxiliary, Exeter, prepared the devotions which were given by Beatrice Ersman and Pauline Simmons. The WMS Purpose was repeated in unison. Lois Kipfer welcomed everyone and the Rev. Kate Ballagh-Steeper brought greetings from Huron- Perth Presbytery. Edna Simmons, Exeter, read the minutes of the last annual meeting. Margaret Peebles, Atwood, gave the treasurer's report showing that $60,523.14 had been sent to the general fund for missions. This was $857.35 short of the Presbyterial objective. Pat White, Goderich, was moderator for the various secretaries' reports. Area Educational Consultant Margaret Greig, led a Bible Study on the theme based on Romans 15: 1-6, showing how mission has changed from a "sender-receiver" model to a partnership model. Partners in Canada and throughout the world indicate their need and the WMS along with other mission agencies seek to meet it. The afternoon session began with a sing-song led by Verna Willows, with Lois Kipfer at the piano. Jean Edmunds read a poem, "Silver Birch." Joyce Thorne, Pat White, and Pearl Hendry, from Goderich Afternoon Auxiliary, gave the Heather Wilson, recently returned from a two week visit to the Dominican Republic as part of a 12-member Canadian team. The teamed helped in the con- struction of a church camp building which has been an ongoing project for a year. devotions. Ronald Kipfer sang a solo. The roll call, "In a sentence tell how you are stronger through hope," was answered by all groups present. Verna Willows, Stratford, introduced the guest speaker, Jean Aitcheson of Avonton, who spoke mainly on the work she did as part of a group who went to Guatemala. As a nurse, she collected many of the things this throw-away society discards such as used bandages. Nine hockey bags full of used and new medical supplies went with her. In Guatemala she set up a pharmacy and clinic where up to 100 patients a day were treated. Most of the others in the two- week mission to Guatemala were involved in building a cement block school for 250 children, mostly Mayan. The offering was received by the PCW of St. Andrew's Church. Pat White gave a tribute and plaque to former WMS groups who are no longer active: Glengowan, St. Marys, accepted by Muriel Sheldon; Auburn, accepted by Ida White; Stratford St. Andrew's WMS, accepted by Jeanne Coulthard; Knox Stratford-Bethany Auxiliary accepted by Mary Scott; Burns Milverton WMS accepted by letter from Laura Coxton. Robina Alexander, Listowel, presented a painting by Jean Edmunds to Margaret Greig, who is leaving this district to replace Barbara Woodruff as programme secretary of the Women's Missionary Society. Eleanor Stevenson, Cranbrook, "There is very good fellowship when involved in such a project," says Pastor Carne. "Not only are we doing something for them, but the experience does something for us." As part of his ministry, Pastor Carne says he likes to get the con- gregation involved in many activi- ties. Following that theme, there is work underway to allow a group of young people to travel to Mexico later this year. His parish is also involved in their annual mission conference this week. Beginning on March 3, Windows of the World conference began with a morning and evening service which featured guest speakers from Africa and Indonesia. On Monday, the mission in the inner city of Windsor was dis- cussed while Tuesday offered a speaker from Russia. The conference will end March 6 with a guest from Brazil. Each evening's service features appropriate stage settings and inter- esting backdrops. The conferences are held as a mission fundraiser which goes to Canadian inner city work as well as foreign concerns. "Last year the congregation raised $50,000 and it is hoped this year's will be as successful," says Pastor Carrie. "It is wonderful what a congrega- tion of 100 to 140 can do." Fundraising by the parish was only $2,800 when Pastor Carne took over the charge more than 10 years ago. Proceeds (and the con- gregation) have steadily grown. presented the slate of officers, who were installed by Margaret Greig.
